she did get more time than billy lane......

her father says: “My daughter doesn’t belong in jail. It would do her a lot of harm,” Velasco said. “Jails are for bad people who pose a threat to society.”

i guess killing someone isn't posing any threat to society?  what a tool.  and he's in law enforcement as well.

Maybe they can put the b!tch that was texting while driving in the lane next to me on my way home for lunch in the cell next to her.  Speeding up / slowing down / swerving - just like a drunk.

Then yesterday, woman almost drove out of the SCHOOL parking lot in front of me - texting/dialing.

They outta bury these people under the jail.  I swear that is the reason I don't carry!!!!!  The temptation to pop a few rounds off would be too great.   >:(

OK, rant over.  :P

Her dad being a LEO should have kept his mouth shut. Imagine, asking the D.A. for probation when his dtr blew 3x the legal limit. There's a good by-the-book cop unless it happens to be his dtr that's the offender! :coolblue:

I would love it if the media and the legal system would stop calling this sort of stuff "accidents".  To me an accident is something beyond our control, like when a tree suddenly falls over after ten days of rain and lands on someone's car.  A drunk causing a crash, or a texting nit-wit causing a crash, is not an accident.  It is a crime, plain and simple, and it needs to be treated as such.

I agree with you grc,
Some of the problem is that many of society (judges, politicians, juries, and media etc.) have been guilty of the same behavior and they didn't have the severe consequences so they think "there but for the grace of God go I" and feel like she/he didn't mean to overdo it and kill that person. They don't want to destroy the driver's life for one "mistake". They don't think about the true victim or their family. They also don't realize that a DUI requires a whole series of bad choices for it to happen not just one little oops.

So what is a fair penalty then?

Shot all drivers with alcohol on their breath at the roadside seem a little harsh although I am all for it.

Driving a motor vehicle is handling deadly force and should be considered as such. If your daughter was killed or crippled by some drunk in a car it should be sentenced as if the same drunk carelessly fired a gun at her. For your example of stopping a DUI before a death or injury maybe the courts should consider actually giving jail time instead of just substance abuse classes and a restricted license, maybe even confiscate the car.
Laws against DUI have been on the books for decades but arrests didn't decline until organizations like MADD started to convince people that driving drunk was morally wrong.
Similar things for inattentive driving need to be done, convince people that it's wrong to drive and talk on phone or text etc. Technology could help there by shutting off phone when traveling above 5mph or so. many of us grew up before cell phones and we survived....when did we become so self absorbed and important that we can't be "unplugged" for a few minutes???

A perfect example is, before cell phones, how many lines did you see at the phone booth? NOW about 50% of the cars you pass/are passed by, the driver is on the phone!!

I was probably not clear. I will happily execute anyone that drinks and drive. Clear?

I commute 72 miles to work each day and amazingly it is 72 miles back home each day. All Interstate.
About a week ago I was passed by a young girl driving at least 85 MPH and had sunvisor down and was
looking in mirror and putting on mascara.

My reaction was to make sure i got away from her and then I wanted her to pull over so I could Whip her
arse for being so stupid!!!!
