Enterprise renting Harleys in Las Vegas
« on: October 20, 2013, 09:00:16 PM »

The pilot program is the company's first foray into motorcycle rentals, but in Vegas there's already lots of other bikes to choose.

There's no pleasure you can't buy in Las Vegas, and motorcycles come cheaper than a night out at one of Gordon Ramsay's casino restaurants. For less than $200 a day, you can cruise the strip on a shiny Harley-Davidson Fat Boy and speed into the desert.

Enterprise wants a piece of the action, so the car rental giant just opened its first motorcycle rental program outside the strip consisting entirely of Harleys. Currently, riders can choose among five Harley-Davidson models, including the Street Glide, Road Glide Custom and Ultra, and the Electra Glide Classic and Ultra Limited. Two more bikes, the Heritage Softail Classic and the Fat Boy Lo, will be available by the end of November.

Prices start at $161 per day, including tax and unlimited miles. Motorcycle licenses are mandatory and so are helmets, although if you don't bring one on the plane ride to Vegas, they'll fit you in one for free.

Motorcyclists can legally run red lights in Nevada

Plenty of private rental companies have bike rentals across the country (Indian trike in Miami, anyone?), and in Vegas some companies rent out BMWs, Ducatis and other high-performance rides for similar prices. If the pilot program is successful, Enterprise said it may consider motorcycle rentals in other cities. But the combination of loud, rumbling Harleys on canyon roads ---- will be a tough combination to beat.  not to mention that it's now legal to run red lights on a bike in all of Nevada

You might want to explain that running red lights deal in more detail.  I'm sure I know what it's all about, but I'd hate to think someone out there would actually think you could just blow through a red light in Nevada without stopping first.  That would be a good way to kill off a lot of bikers.

You have to wait for 2 cycles of red lights and no other traffic present

I do that now , just as long as no one else around
They just made it legal

To many states have sensors in the road motorcycles do not trip
And you would have wait for a car.

I have one of those at the end of my road.

Every Sunday I have go through red to get out

Tennessee has had the motorcycle / red light law for several years now.  Around where I live you get to know which lights work for bikes and which ones don't.  Any time I approach the unfriendly lights, I treat them as four way stops.  As long as there are no vehicles approaching I just stop and go.  I've done this several times in front of local LEO's and have never been pulled over for it.

Not sure I'd have the patience to wait 20 minutes for a car to run over those coils... One red cycle and I'm outa there.

I was fully aware of the intent of the law, but just found it amazing how the writer of that advertising blurb put that "legal to run red lights" thing in there twice, like it was some really super duper selling point for flying to Vegas and renting a bike.  Lots of places have similar laws these days, and even those that don't usually have LEO's who understand and don't screw with folks who wait for a full light cycle and then turn if the light doesn't.  But they might take exception if you were to just blow through without stopping, as that ad implied (twice).

Red lights and motorcycles don't mix.

It happens all the time here (getting stuck at lights on a bike) and as dlaws mentioned, you simply treat it like a 4-Way stop and go when way is clear.

I do it all the time and have never been questioned.

We've all had this experience of the turn light not turning green because our bike didn't trip the sensor.  I had one that was an everyday occurance at a major intersection and I knew it was only a matter of time before I'd be on the side of the road trying to explain it.

I got a reply from a traffic engineer that also happens to be one of us (a rider) and here's his reply:  " I’ll make some adjustments today let me know if it works,

All motorcycle cops know of the detector issues, I’m sure if you explain what happened the cop will let you off.

If not I will be happy to testify in your behalf

Regards"

I have a signal near my business that never recognizes my bike so I've treated it like a stop sign for years. Recently the city installed cameras at that intersection. I still treat it the same and have never received a ticket, yet. Not sure if they're giving bikers a break or the camera can't see my plate under the tour pack.

Regarding renting a Harley in LV, I've done it but not to "cruise the strip". Who wants to sit in traffic on a Harley anyway? I got out of town on my rental as fast as possible, great roads out in the desert and mountains nearby.

(This info taken from http://auto.howstuffworks.com/car-driving-safety/safety-regulatory-devices/question234.htm)

The capacity of an inductor is controlled by two factors:

The number of coils

The material that the coils are wrapped around (the core)

Putting iron in the core of an inductor gives it much more inductance than air or any other non-magnetic core would. There are devices that can measure the inductance of a coil, and the standard unit of measure is the henry.

So... Let's say you take a coil of wire perhaps 5 feet in diameter, containing five or six loops of wire. You cut some grooves in a road and place the coil in the grooves. You attach an inductance meter to the coil and see what the inductance of the coil is. Now you park a car over the coil and check the inductance again. The inductance will be much larger because of the large steel object positioned in the loop's magnetic field. The car parked over the coil is acting like the core of the inductor, and its presence changes the inductance of the coil.

A traffic light sensor uses the loop in that same way. It constantly tests the inductance of the loop in the road, and when the inductance rises, it knows there is a car waiting!

Those coils are easily adjusted, the problem is getting someone to come out and actually do so.  I've got one particular intersection that I almost always go through when out riding, and up until about a year ago it detected my bike just fine.  Then the state highway geniuses ground and repaved the intersection, and ever since bikes won't trip the sensor but it works fine for cars.  Obviously the new pavement is the problem, and the sensor should have been adjusted.  Maybe when the new pavement wears down to the level of the old stuff it will self adjust?  Probably happen before the state sends anyone out to go into the control box and tweak the settings.
