Stock tire lifespan?
« on: October 21, 2013, 06:13:42 PM »

Howdy.  How many miles can we get out of the stock tires on our 2012's ?  Im coming up on 8000, and am about to do monotubes and Progressive 444's in the back.  Was wondering if new tires would be good to do soon?

I will likely wait till after the suspension is done so that I can tell the difference with the current tires.  If I did it all at once I would never know how much is from new tire, and how much is from suspension..

Are Avon's the best way to go?  Any preference's out there ?

Thanks

What bike are you talking about?  Tires on a Touring rig will tend to get different average mileage than a Softy or Dyna for instance.  Anyway, measure the tread depth and let that determine when to change the tires.  There is no single number of miles that fits every rider and every bike.

Sorry, my post was moved from the Road Glide forum so I did not indicate the bike at issue.

Thanks for the input.  I am curious what, if any, an average milage is for the tires that come with the 2012 Road Glide Custom.  The low profile tire, and set up of the bike, likely influence the wear and I am curious what others have experienced.

You shouldn't need tires at 8000 miles they should be just broken in???

I'm more interested in hearing how the new suspension feels.  As far as tires, I think Harley chose a good universal tread pattern.

Ok.  You got it.  I will come back and let you know.  Unfortunatley the rear shocks (Progressive 444's in black, 12") are on back order until 11/5.  I will likely get the front end mono tubes installed by end of next week.  Also doing 10" or 12" apes (Yafee Monkey Bars).

I will give a report on the big change when it's all done.  I know I would appreciate one, so I will be happy to share this time around...

Don't know about the 2012 models but Dunlop changed the composition of their tires in response to Michelin getting a lot more miles out of theirs. The ride has improved also. I've been told expect up to 18K or more.
