Fullsac Backfire
« on: October 23, 2013, 02:48:28 PM »

I have installed the DX-Pipes, 96-103 Muffler Recore kit and programmed my Mastertune with a map from Fullsac on my 2013 Ultra. I’m getting a backfire, periodically, when I go from 1st to 2nd and 2nd to 3rd. Any ideas on what would be causing that?

Only a guess. Did you use high temp RTV to seal the cans to the pipes? Are all connections airtight along exhaust path? It could be sucking air in when you let off to shift and that may be causing the pop.  :nixweiss:

What Pete said plus have you attempted to contact Steve at FulSac to get his input?  From what I've read/heard, he's very good to help out on any/all issues.

The best way to check for leaks is with some rags, 3'-4' of 3/8" hose and a friend. Start the bike and allow to idle, have the friend place rags in each hand and then try to stop the exhaust from coming out of the mufflers. This will raise the pressure in the exhaust so you can use the piece of hose with one end in your ear and the other end to move around any joints in the system. If there is a leak you will hear it right away. Now, mind you your friend is not going to be able to hold the mufflers plugged for a long time before there hands start getting hot so a set of gloves may help. Fix any leaks you find and then test again afterwards

Good idea. I'll give that a try.

Contact Steve at Fullsac and he will make some adjustments to the map he sent along with the tuner. But before you make contact, make sure whoever did the install did not mix up the O2 sensors on the exhaust. That will be his first question right off the bat. I beleive the black wire goes to the rear cylinder.

If your having decel issues, send me back the map with your name and all bike details. I would be happy to make an adjustment or two for you.

You would be very surprised just how many bikes have exhaust leaks. While some are benign others are well placed to suck in some cold air during decal. Shift pop is no different.

I asked Steve about it at FullSac when the X pipe is involved and he gave me a quick adjustment. Worked perfectly. Thanks again Steve!

For you more adventurous guys... Remove the heat shields that cover pipe joints. Remove a spark plug and squirt about 1/2 oz of light weight oil in the cylinder, replace the plug. (Don't use a penetrate) Fire that puppy up. If it leaks, it smokes. Remember, not all exhaust leaks are harmful. But if you want to find them all...

Someone who smokes(whatever it may be) and a windless area works well also.  Gives smoking a good purpose.  Some exhaust shops have smoke machines for finding leaks.
If popping on long decel add a couple of degrees of timing to closed throttle spark at the bottom right 4 block corner.  If it doing it when shifting lower decell enleanment but it is best to get any leaks fixed first and foremost to prevent sensors from picking up the leak.

Bottom left you mean bottom right would be 100 KPA

I have had some that are a bugger to get to stop with certain mufflers. I have found to advance the timing as stated then remove all decel fuel and see what happens. Its a test to see what way you need to move the cells.

Bottom right of the "closed throttle spark" table is higher temp and 4k rpm to 2k I believe but not kpa based like the main spark table.
