2nd New Motor in 21k Miles!!
« on: October 28, 2013, 06:58:41 PM »

'09 SERG - Crank Position Sensor covered w/ metal, no noise, tapping, knocks, top end extremely quiet (for a 110) plenty of power everywhere (To quote Greg K when we were riding in Malibu earlier this month; "That thing sounds healthy"), no sign what so ever, until failure.

The bike has 20,550 miles, crank was replaced at 9,xxx miles for front rod bearing out of spec (discovered during teardown for SE Stage III)

We are all curious as to what component failed, will have it torn down in a few days...

I would pay the extra and have the crank and Timken done if you can. Sorry you gotta deal with it again.

MoCo believes everybody should buy a spare motor, keep it on hand, and install it every 20K miles...reliability would increase greatly (as would their profit margins).   >:(

Ed,
Very sorry to read this. I hope you did not get stranded! It shows how much I know about the sound of a good motor.   :nixweiss:

Greg

Greg,
Luckily we were able to ride the bike to Outpost HD in Pueblo, CO. 10/21/13

You know the sound of a good motor, the motor sounded great to me right up until failure...
We were heading from Santa Fe to Pueblo, made a pit stop in Raton and my friend with the 113 Skunk called from the Blue Ridge, asked me how the bike was running, I said Never Better, it's quieter than your hi-$ 113.

The bike fired right up as it always has (see my op), we proceeded North through Raton Pass, some construction, and back up to cruising speed, all is well, about 40 miles South of Pueblo we pulled off the I-25 to take some pics of the early snow on the peaks of the Rockies to our left.
As I downshifted to 2nd & 1st the bike wanted to die and started making a little noise for the first time, had plenty of oil / pressure.
It fired right back up and I rode into Pueblo and stopped to search the iPhone GPS for the Harley Dealer which was about 3 miles away, when I restarted the bike that time I knew it was terminal, but it made it to the Harley shop. Usually when a motor has a problem like this there are symptoms leading up to the problem like unusual noises, loss of power, etc... that's what has us scratching our heads as to what component failed first.

The Service Dept. of Outpost HD really took care of us! They were great!!
We got a truck and the 3 of us (bike, "The B&C" and I) are back in The Sunshine State awaiting teardown and what the ESP inspector will sign off on.

I told my GM that I was lobbying for a crate motor from the MoCo, we'll know more when we see inside...

Did anybody notice for 2014 for the first time the motor company is offering a short block assembly as a replacement part number?  Cases, crankshaft, cam chest assembly as a unit.

Leave it to HD to create a profit center from poor design.

The front intake lifter failed and took out the rest of the motor.

ESP is inspecting in the next day or so.

My Dealer says that ESP will probably not bite off on a new crate motor from Harley, even though everything will have to be replaced from the cases to the heads. My Dealer already has new heads (still in the bags) that he said we will put on my bike instead of rebuilding the original heads  :bananarock: :bananarock:
