Ignition Switch Set to Accessories……but no rear light?
« on: October 29, 2013, 12:57:05 PM »

2010 Ultra Limited
I was checking my lights today and inadvertently discovered that when I turn my ignition switch to the accessories position… that my rear lights go off….all else seems to be powered…radio, power point, ect

The odd thing is that if I place the switch in the ignition position then turn the flashers on….all is good…lights flashing both front and back….then I move the switch to accessories the front still flashes but the rear goes dead.

All is good while the switch is in the ignition position.

Anyone have any ideas…thanks

What happens if you turn on the flashers and then turn the ignition OFF?

The front remains to flash but the rear goes dead.

If after putting your hazard lights on and all lights are flashing and then the  rear lights go out when the bike is switched OFF, something is wrong and it should be checked out.

Have seen some of the devices that plug in to alter or mix the brake and tail light display cause this.  Added any kind of load equalizer or other lighting accessory?

I have changed the rear tail light and turn signals to LED's which requires a load equalizer.  You think this could be the problem?  I could disconnect them and check for voltage at the terminal.

The combination could.  Some of the equalizers are more than just load equalizers.  They also make the tail lights gain a brake light function and vice versa.  Some of the aftermarket LED bulbs are quirky in that they aren't standard bulbs.  This is especially so for the dual filament (1157) replacements.  Some of them are made to be either on or off all the time and the power feed is used as a signal feed to make them function.  That mix can make you lose a hazard flasher function on one end or the other.  Have seen the misbehavior on both ends at different times.

Since you've got an electrical quirk and have also added aftermarket pieces make sure the problem isn't with the pieces before digging deeper.  The KISS principle is always a good idea.

Your equalizer is likely plug and plug.  So take it out and try the hazard flashers again.  If it still doesn't work take the bulbs you added out and put the stockers back in then try again.

Fortunately these are all simple things to try.  And if at some point in the process you regain normal function you'll know what the culprit is.  My hunch is you'll get it sorted.

There are probably a lot of bikes that lose flashers at one end after doing some lighting changes.  It's just one of those things most don't think to check for while doing a quickly "oh look my lights work" check after the install.  Good luck.

Yep, doing the led switch with equalizer can cause weird problems. On my '09, when I turn on my turn signal and hit the front brake it activates the flashers. Rear brake works fine. Until this, I always thought the brake light was tied together front & back.

Hoping to get into it tomorrow....today was in the 70's so decided to ride over to Battlefield Harley in Gettysburg.

They only had 2 CVOs.....a red one and the white/blue Deluxe models.
Just not sure why the Deluxe is more than the Road King?

Problem solved.
After reviewing the wiring diagrams in the service manual (best money ever spent) I determined that there were two running light circuits in the main harness under the seat. Pin #2 and #7.

Pin #2 is for the brake lights and powered when ignition switch is in either ign or accessories.
Pin #7 is for the tour pack lights and is not powered when the ignition which is in the accessories position.

Looking at the RWD 6-Pin Connector Wire Interface Assembly..... which tapped into pin #7 for running light power.....thus why the tail lights did not come on in the accessories position.

I switched pins #2 and #7 in the Interface Assembly and all good.

Many thanks for everyones comments.
