Runout of front discs??
« on: October 31, 2013, 05:21:41 PM »

Hello and happy? Halloween

I would appreciate a comment or two please.

CVO Roadglide Ultra 2012 (actually a 2011 model)

I am experiencing a slight pumping action on the front brake lever at moderate speeds when just trailing the brake.

When coming to stop I get the vague feeling the front brake is gripping then letting go in synchronisation with the wheel rotation, this is at barely walking pace.

When braking moderately heavy from sixty mph or so I get a faint judder, nothing alarming but it is there.

So, I think this is the discs or one of them buckled.

I have had a dial gauge on them and the following is the reading around the outer edge of the disc (as far out as you can get just missing the holes):

Offside disc. 0.006" runout (0.15mm)

Nearside disc. 0.003" runout. (0.08mm)

I would say this is acceptable.

Anyone got any suggestions?

Harley floating rotors are known to warp. Talk to your dealer... many have been replaced under warranty (mine were).

Harley claims that .008" TIR is acceptable.  It really isn't, but in many cases folks have been screwed over under warranty when Harley stuck to that number.  That much runout will definitely create brake pulsation, as will the .006" you mentioned.

Whack it with a rubber mallet to give it a good warp beyond .009 and then talk it in for warranty. Two can play this game.  ;)

Yep I have had rotors replaced for being warped under warranty.  They are warped again but not over harley specs.  My warranty is about up, Dec 7 it is up.   Hopefully this last 3500 miles with some hard brake usage in cold weather finished the task.

I purchased the extended warranty on my 2011 SERG. I called the warranty company to ask if warped discs would be covered because I was getting the pulsing action when applying the front brakes. They said that it would be covered because it is considered a 'safety' issue. They even said to tell the dealer to call them to verify the coverage.

However when i took it in to the dealer they wouldn't cover it because it was only .004 out of spec. Then they tried to tell me that it's actually the ABS system that is causing the pulsing and that it is normal...total BS!!

The logical assumption is that it's a 12 purchased in 11.  Doesn't seem that strange.
