I consider any type of plug, even the motorcycle specific version, to be an emergency temporary repair to be used only until you can get the tire replaced.  I know it's very hard to make yourself buy a new tire if you get a puncture on a fairly new tire, but when you consider the possible consequences of a sudden failure on the highway when you only have two tires holding you up the $300 for a new tire starts looking fairly cheap.

I've had one sudden deflation of a rear tire in my 40 plus rears of riding, but one was more than enough thank you very much.  Great job saving it Muddy!

Same for me front tire going downhill. Bad tank slapper and my bike was almost new, only reason I didn't bail. Got the recall notice 2 weeks later. Definetly don't ever want another.

Whew!
Had some friends that weren't so fortunate with a rear flat at 65mph.   Glad you stayed up fellow Virginian.

Good Job keeping it up!!Happened to the wife and I in Canada one year coming home from Laconia Bike Week, we were pulling the trailer also, it took a little to get it under control but we stayed up. A good passenger that knows what to do is helpful. Again congrats on staying up.

glad to hear it was almost also. :2vrolijk_21:

I've taken the tire off and patched them from the inside with good results, but it's still in the back of my mind I'm riding on a repaired tire.  :nixweiss:

Rather be lucky than good! Very happy to here you only had dirty underwear. I have always worried about losing a tire like that and how it would turn out...not a situation you can really practice.

I have a repair kit with motorcycle specific type plugs - they have a mushroom head and a tool to insert the plug.  Used it to repair a friends tire last month but  wouldn't trust any plug for long.  Glad you got through.

i have the same kit and also carry a small air compressor on the bike for an emergency.  never had to use it, but reading this thread, a question popped into my head.  if you have the esp with tire and wheel, and get a flat and plug it to ride to the dealer, will they still replace the tire?  or do they expect you to sit on the side of the road and wait for a tow?

Maybe your passenger can give others some good advice if she doesn't mind. I'm only asking because those that may need the advice probably won't  ask.

First thing I told her was "we are going to crash" and all i heard from her was "no we are not". We have been riding Harley's for about 350,000 miles over the past 20+ years and I really don't even know she is on the back. All she did was hold on. However she did pull the back rest right out of the socket.

Sounds a lot like my wife.  They think they can effect outcomes by the force of their will and by golly I do believe they oftentimes can!  Having a co-rider who stays calm and in control is absolutely priceless in emergency situations like this.

I didn't have a blowout but after hitting a landscape timber (yeah a big railroad tie kind of timber) my front tire deflated after a few miles.  When I realized what was happening and slowed down to stop, like you I was all over the road and this was dark, early evening, rush hour traffic on a metro interstate with a gazillion cars and trucks whizzing by as I tried to get stopped on the shoulder.  Even though she knew and I told her I was having a helluva time getting stopped she never panicked - a real trooper.
