Nikon 18-200 VR lens issues
« on: November 05, 2013, 01:03:30 PM »

Anyone have the problem with the lens hunting for focus and not locking on? This is not the "II" version.

I have had the previous problems with this lens where the front ring falls out or all the screws loosen up and "almost" fall out.

Was on the beach last week with the dogs and had to stop the pics because the lens went hay wire. Was running between .3 to infinity and fact. Sounds a bit odd too. Manual focus seemed to work but still felt-sounded funny.

Right before the problem I had an issue with the focus point jumping all around instead of staying on my locked location.

That was a common problem with the earlier VR lenses, Duane. I had one do almost exactly what you described a few years ago, tried it on a couple of different bodies to make sure it was the lens. Sent it back to Nikon and they repaired it, don't remember exactly what they did though. I eventually sold it and bought a newer VR-II.  Honestly I think the older lens had better glass but this newer one is pretty sweet, I've had no complaints with it other than the weight.

Art, tried it on 3 different bodies, definitely the lens. 3 months out of the 5 year warranty on a $700 lens. I looked at the II when it came out, even pricier. I also think the older version has better glass and probably why it weighs more then the II. Key feature with the II is the zoom lock.

Nikon wants $200 to fix  >:(

Starting to get disappointed with nikon. CS use to be top notch with them when they had a lot of competition (Minolta). Now you can't get any answers from them. I have some real exposure issues with my 7000, enough so that I am considering replacing it. But it seems with all the self image processing that these cameras now do, getting back to real colors are not as easy as the days of the manual shutter boxes

Duane,

I had the front ring issue on mine 2.5 years ago (I Version also) but never the symptom you described.  I sold it with my D90 a while back to a friend so I will see if they have seen this problem.

I now have a small fortune invested in Nikon (especially glass) and there is no way for me to change at the moment.  Let me know if you want to try something from WFP Lens rentals!  The Only DX I have is the 10.5 fisheye which still works great on FF.

Bill, given that I may have to fix or replace this lens I am considering moving to FX, 600-610 maybe - and starting over - again.
Although I do have one FX lens, a Japanese made Nikkor 60MM
