Thanks, if it turns out that this is the original engine and was a mistake by HD what, if anything, would that do to the value of the bike? What if the engine had to have been replaced for some reason. Same question. Also should the VIN on the frame match the engine #'s?

Seems odd the motor is black and both the inner primary and the transmission is granite

Are you saying that a 2013 SERK could have a black engine originally from the factory? I ask because all of the 2013 SERKs I've seen (except this one) have granite engines that match the primary cover and the other components.

I emailed the seller inquiring about the mismatch,

Aloha, I noticed that in the pictures the Engine Cases are Black in Color, but the Transmission and inner primary are Granite Gray as they should be.

Has the engine been replaced?

Thanks

Rob

Before this bike left the dealership with no miles on it a set of apes were installed, custom exhaust was put on, and the motor was beefed up. This thing is awesome fast.. If you are interested I can get a copy of the receipt for you to see exactly what was done with the motor.

He was talking about a 2012 Road Glide, not a Road King.  For the 2013 CVO Road King, the regular version has an all granite engine and trans.  The Anniversary 2013 CVO Road King has the black engine and trans.  The ebay ad you posted doesn't claim it is an anniversary model, so in fact the entire thing should be granite.  I originally thought when looking at the photo's that perhaps there was a lighting issue that made the engine look darker, but of course you have now indicated you've looked at it in person and the engine is indeed black.  It shouldn't be a mix of granite parts and black parts (and the real black engines also had gloss black covers, not chrome).  So at this point I am at a loss as to what they have.  Perhaps Harley screwed up when they assembled the bike, or perhaps the dealer did something weird when they modified the engine (see the post from 2012_FLTRXSE).  Anyhow, check the engine serial number stamped on the case, it should match the serial number on the frame and in the paperwork.  And if you are seriously interested in the bike get a copy of the actual repair order for the mods mentioned in that post from 2012_FLTRXSE.  A 2013 should still have the remaining time on the factory two year warranty, but internal engine mods may have voided that.  It's always best to know all this stuff going into the negotiations, and if there is no warranty and they mismatched the engine and primary/trans, there should be a reduction in price since those things do affect resale value.

Thanks Jerry. I'm feeling less and less comfortable with this whole deal. When I went and looked at it he claimed not to know why the engine was black since he just bought it to re-sell (he is a dealer, (www.drivenrodsandrides.com). He says he is going to contact the dealership where the bike was purchased and the modification were done and ask them what's going on. I will let you know what he says.

I really appreciate all the helpful comments, I could have walked into a mess with this!

I would agree with you in being wary on this, Evo.  It looks like it's not the original engine, as I'm pretty sure the factory would not make that big of an oversight or intentional decision on a CVO.  Someone would have forced them to change that on the line before it rolled off (IMO).

UPDATE!

OK, I found out that the dealership where this bike was purchased from had to replace the engine under warranty. The owner decided to order the new engine in black because he got this crazy idea that HD owners like to be different! Not only did he order a black replacement engine, he went ahead and had it built to the hilt with all sorts of high performance mods topped off with the D&D and a Power Commander. I'm getting the build sheet from the dealer as soon as they can get it to me that will list the details of exactly what all was done but it appears it was ported and cam'ed up and you get the idea. So, the warranty is no good because of the hot rod parts and the engine color doesn't match.....and I'll be an SOB but now I want it even more!! What's wrong with me and is there any hope for my salvation???? Can you say "motor head?"

You guys have been an awesome resource so what's the verdict on how this affects the value? My guess is that it doesn't add or subtract but it defiantly narrows the resell market because of the major mods to the engine. Comments?

I'm surprised the dealer was able to order a "non-production" item as a "replacement"... I would think it would be a one-for one situation, but I guess thats not really the case....

I was led to believe that they gave him "credit" for a stock replacement engine and then he paid them extra $$ to have that one tricked out. More info as I get the details......
