Engine temperature from one cylinder to the other
« on: November 10, 2013, 03:28:43 PM »

Got my bike back yesterday from the recall: 2014 CVO Softail deluxe. Temperature outside is 34° too cold to ride. I still had to start the bike up and found the following (I'm curious as to how and why temperature variance from one cylinder to another. ) Here are some facts: Starting temperature 58° in garage. After five minutes front cylinder 231° And rear cylinder 184° . 10 minutes into test front cylinder 298° rear cylinder 229° oil temp 140° After 15 minutes front cylinder 336° Rear cylinder 267° oil temperature 170 almost a 70° difference in test two and three. Again if this is normal why?

Just a WAEG (wild @$$ educated guess)... the rear cylinder is set up richer than the front because it is out of the air stream to naturally cool it. :nixweiss:

That would seem to be a pretty good guess to me.

Agreed... not something I would recommend doing for an air cooled engine.

Okay I will not reproduce this test in the future due to all your concerns. I'm assuming your concerns are due to the lack of air-flow while it's setting in my garage. If that is the case, it brings up another concern. I've been in stop and go traffic way longer than 15 minutes with temperatures way in excess of 58° Should that be a concern also?

"Stop and Go" is a lot different than "Stopped & Idling"... If I found myself in traffic that would be stopped for 15 minutes I would shut my bike down... if there was intermittent movement IE: "stop & go" I probably wouldn't... apples to oranges. :nixweiss:

Idle temperature control hits at 287.  Where do you measure your temp?  Oil or head?

If your parade mode is enabled, it is supposed to react that way...  Did you notice a change in the revs when it got hot?

You probably already know about parade mode, but just wanted to mention, just in case...

I'm unaware of a parade mode that applies to my bike ( 2014 Softail deluxe ) I find no mention of it in my owners manual. As far as where the temperature was taken it was taken on top of the head with an infrared gun.

How are you measuring the temperatures, and where?  The engine only has one engine temperature sensor, and it's in the front cylinder head.  If you are using some kind of contact or noncontact thermometer on an exterior surface, I'd suggest your test method is probably responsible for at least some of the difference.

Is the bike completely stock, or has it been tuned?  Is the EITMS enabled (rear cylinder shutdown)?  It's unlikely the stock tune would be running the rear cylinder so much richer than the front that it would cause this sort of temp difference.  The stock tune has to comply with emissions standards, and the amount of excess fuel required to cool the rear cylinder that much would be ridiculous and illegal.  If someone has done a custom tune then anything is possible, but that much difference just due to excess fuel in the rear cylinder is hard to believe as well.

It's called EITMS (Engine Idle Temperature Management System).

The temperature is being taken right on top of the heads inch and a half left of the spark plug with a pretty sophisticated infrared gun trust me temperatures are accurate. The bike is completely 100% stock bought it five weeks ago 266 miles on it. So are you saying that with an approximate 70° difference I should call the the dealership and bounce this info off them?

Ok, so you are using a sophisticated IR temp gun.  What do you have the Emissivity set to?  What color is the spot you are taking the temp on, and is it an identical hue at both spots?  Any of the above will change your readings.

Yup, they all do.  And I'm pretty certain the manuals explain how it works and how to enable/disable it.  It's very simple on the electronic throttle equipped bikes.
