How to plug a flat tire session - Portland area
« on: November 11, 2013, 12:24:08 AM »

I am thinking of hosting a technical session at our home <garage> in Vancouver, WA which is near Portland for those that don't know. Topic being how to plug a flat <tubeless> tire. I have many old tires that we can use and practice on, and all you would need to bring is your repair kit.

Flat tires concern so many and this seems like a fun and great way to learn a useful skill. I am thinking about Saturday Dec 7 or Sunday Dec 8.

Any interest in this?

You should definitely do this on December 7.  Can top the day off with a game of Pearl Harbor and you can be the USN.

Since this is taking place there, I think it is only fair that those who plan to attend be forewarned about your crazy-steep and impossible driveway: http://www.cvoharley.com/smf/index.php?topic=90047.0

Of course, as long as he keeps it covered with blankets and has that engine lift handy, what could go wrong?  You might even feel like going out and getting a tat the very same night to celebrate flipping your bike in a driveway, just like your host did: http://www.cvoharley.com/smf/index.php?topic=90136.0

The session is at my Vancouver, WA home.  The pictures above were taken at my Bishop, CA home.  My Washington home has a fully enclosed four car garage and a level driveway.

I'm in!! I have many times thought to myself, "How do I plug a tire?"  I would also like to review the proper way to right a motorcycle that has been completely turned upside down as I see this as a useful skill given that I too have a precarious slope and narrowness to my driveway.  One never knows when I could end up inverted.. :nixweiss:

That's so true.  I'll bring the drill motor and bits to put holes in his tires so he can demonstrate the plugging method.  If that fails rather than tire plugs his hair plugs will be obvious for everyone to admire instead.

That's easy!  Crawl underneath the bike (on your belly).  Start straining mightily to lift.  Use that straining effort to FART HUGE.  Blow the bike back upright.

Is there any specific tire repair kit you recommend?

I learned a long time ago that everyone has something to contribute. Passmeabeer has been generous enough to share his knowledge, skills, and abilities at plugging tires. I've seen tires plugged at the gas station and by the roadside service guys. I can see myself carrying a good plug kit in my truck along with a 12volt compressor for emergencies.

PassMeABeer, I'd like to hear what specific tools and equipment you use and what you recommend, please.

Isn't there supposed to be a discussion about dead cats here?  :nixweiss:

Only TMPaP (The Most Precious and Anointed) members may mention that feline-ious thread which we shall not mention here by name.  Would you like to be Anointed?

The cost is a dollar four seventy-four .5 and the process is only moderately painful.  The cost is eliminated if you are already either a recognized Bastard (with number) or a SoA member (or full associate).

This is all entirely dismissed, however, if your motorcycle is inverted on your driveway more than any three days of any one calendar year for spoke adjustment (or to polish your oil pan).  All costs also forgiven if you are a moderator who has never moved a thread (except on Tuesdays with a full moon [no, that kind of a "moon"]).
