There is some real torque there. [smiley=xyxthumbs.gif]

I wonder if there is heavy gryoscopic force from that much metal spinning in the same direction.

Radial engines are a real engineering masterpiece. If you live anywhere near an aerospace museum chances are probably good they have one in cutaway. I know the San Diego aerospace museum does. To pick up on your question, radial engines do not have flywheels. No need with cylinders in a 360 degree pattern around the crankshaft. They have one master connecting rod and the rest " float" somehow. (I can only figure it out when I'm looking at one in cutaway.) Anway, I would think that lack of flywheels would reduce what you mention to a degree, but you probably have a point.

One more...Basically a v-twin is very similar in design...with a few less cylinders.

This bike was featured on AM Thunder last week. The builder said it coughs and spits on start up like the old WWI planes but once it is running it is a real smooth ride. (He didn

Brian,

I agree they are a beautiful example of engineering. Below is the Pratt and Whitney WASP 28 cylinders, 7 x 4 rows.

Check out these last two. The Super Rhone was designed so that the cylinders would revolve around the crank instead of the other way around.

Have seen that one in a warbird museum.  In it's largest application it got a retrofit that converted it from a rotary to a radial.

Man I love this site. Thanks Ed for the pics. Wish I had learned to fly when I was younger so I could take that Mustang up for a spin. Jack Roush has one ( what doesn't he have with the Mustang name) They featured him on Speed Channel and showed him firing it up and flying it. Forget what they said it was worth, but remember it was totally off the charts.

Thanks again

This bike is featured in the December 2006 issue of American Iron.  172CI.  WOW!  Being an aspiring private pilot, and holding an aeronautics degree, I am avidly interested in all things aviation.  Sure trumps the 4 cylinder horizontally opposed Continental in that Cessna I'm flying.
