New Clutch Options for Engine Mods
« on: November 19, 2013, 10:54:02 AM »

So I ended up dropping in a S&S 124 engine with a Baker 7 speed transmission in my bike.  Now I need to make a decision on what to do with the clutch.  I've heard that the clutch with the new compensator will do fine, and I've also heard that when this bike gets broken in, it's just a matter of time before the clutch goes out :confused5:

There's also the performance end of things that I need to consider.  Frankly, I'm more concerned about reliability and function than riding with the front wheel off the ground.

Any thoughts?

The Barnett stuff seems to be popular...
It is recommended to use NON synthetic in the primary

Who recommends avoiding synthetic lube in the primary?  It's not Barnett; the following is from their website FAQ:

------------------------
Q: Can I use synthetic oil or a synthetic blend with a Barnett clutch?
A: Yes. Barnett clutches are designed to work with any type of “motorcycle specific” oil. We DO NOT recommend the use of automotive oils or additives.
------------------------

There is nothing in the primary of a Harley that precludes the use of a proper synthetic lube.  A large number of Harley riders use synthetics from Harley, from Redline, from Mobil 1, from Amsoil, etc.

Didn't intend to mislead anybody, I'm not making big enough #s these days  :( to have to go aftermarket in the primary

The friends that I know that are averaging >35k / year with the built motors tell me that they are running non synthetic auto trans fluid (.99cents) in their primaries, per their builders, when running other than HD clutches.

I'm running Syn3 in the primaries of the 3 bikes ( 2 stock (just hd springs) clutches in the baggers and the SE Billitt Racing Clutch in the Switchblade) all is fine...

I know that  rivera pro clutch recommended dextron type 111. I was looking at the scorpion clutch and read that they only rec 14 oz of oil. this would concern me that the compensator didnt get enough

I use ATF type F in ALL the primaries that I get involved with. Be it in high horsepower or stock bikes, and any after market clutch assy. (Barnett Scorpion is my favorite). Been using it for many years. Haven't had the first, problem yet.   ::)
