Happy Thanksgiving 2013!
« on: November 27, 2013, 11:29:33 AM »

Wishing you all a Happy and Joyous Thanksgiving and since it is concurrent, Happy Hanukkah!  Since I am a history buff, I leave you with this:

Abraham Lincoln's
1863 Thanksgiving Proclamation

It is the duty of nations as well as of men to own their dependence upon the overruling power of God; to confess their sins and transgressions in humble sorrow, yet with assured hope that genuine repentance will lead to mercy and pardon; and to recognize the sublime truth, announced in the Holy Scriptures and proven by all history, that those nations are blessed whose God is the Lord.

We know that by His divine law, nations, like individuals, are subjected to punishments and chastisements in this world. May we not justly fear that the awful calamity of civil war which now desolates the land may be a punishment inflicted upon us for our presumptuous sins, to the needful end of our national reformation as a whole people?

We have been the recipients of the choicest bounties of heaven; we have been preserved these many years in peace and prosperity; we have grown in numbers, wealth and power as no other nation has ever grown.

But we have forgotten God. We have forgotten the gracious hand which preserved us in peace and multiplied and enriched and strengthened us, and we have vainly imagined, in the deceitfulness of our hearts, that all these blessings were produced by some superior wisdom and virtue of our own. Intoxicated with unbroken success, we have become too self-sufficient to feel the necessity of redeeming and preserving grace, too proud to pray to the God that made us.

It has seemed to me fit and proper that God should be solemnly, reverently and gratefully acknowledged, as with one heart and one voice, by the whole American people. I do therefore invite my fellow citizens in every part of the United States, and also those who are at sea and those who are sojourning in foreign lands, to set apart and observe the last Thursday of November as a day of Thanksgiving and praise to our beneficent Father Who dwelleth in the heavens.

A. Lincoln

My dad forwarded me the following poem in an email this morning and I thought it was pretty clever.

Twas the month before Christmas
When all through our land,
Not a Christian was praying
Nor taking a stand.
Why the PC Police had taken away
The reason for Christmas - no one could say.
The children were told by their schools not to sing
About Shepherds and Wise Men and Angels and things.
It might hurt people's feelings, the teachers would say
December 25th is just a '  Holiday '.
Yet the shoppers were ready with cash, checks and credit
Pushing folks down to the floor just to get it!
CDs from Madonna, an X BOX, an I-Pod
Something was changing, something quite odd!
Retailers promoted Ramadan and Kwanzaa
In hopes to sell books by Franken & Fonda.
As Targets were hanging their trees upside down
At Lowe's the word Christmas - was no where to be found.
At K-Mart and Staples and Penny's and Sears
You won't hear the word Christmas; it won't touch your ears.
Inclusive, sensitive, Di-ver-si-ty
Are words that were used to intimidate me.
Now Daschle, Now Darden, Now Sharpton, Wolf Blitzen
On Boxer, on Rather, on Kerry, on  Clinton !
At the top of the Senate, there arose such a clatter
To eliminate Jesus, in all public matter.
And we spoke not a word, as they took away our faith
Forbidden to speak of salvation and grace
The true Gift of Christmas was exchanged and discarded
The reason for the season, stopped before it started.
So as you celebrate 'Winter Break' under your 'Dream Tree'
Sipping your Starbucks, listen to me.
Choose your words carefully, choose what you say
Shout MERRY CHRISTMAS,
not Happy  Holiday !
Please, all Christians join together and
wish everyone you meet
MERRY CHRISTMAS
Christ is The Reason' for the Christ-mas Season!

This is a time when some of us need the Lord in our lives more than ever.  Many of us were brought up with some form of Christianity shoved down our throats like it or not.  Now I think it's safe to say we understand that to have others look at where they stand with their beliefs it's far better to lead by example & not by force.  Having a choice makes things easier to get your brain & heart on the same page.  I will be 60 in a few weeks and it has always been my pleasure to give the Thanksgiving prayer for our family & friends.  At one time our celebration used to be very large but now I will only have one son and his family attend.  My oldest is on some type of leave me alone sabbatical and we have no idea of where he is.  My second oldest married a woman that will have nothing to do with us despite our loving attachments to our grandchildren ages 7 & 4.  My third son tragically took his life at our home when he was 21 and that was over 13 years ago.  Our rebellious younger son is the one who has turned his life around with his wife and his new found belief in the Lord.  Actually I babysat his little girl Annabelle yesterday, what a blessing as I get to do that every other week and there is nothing I look forward to more at this time.

So things are not perfect but I will give thanks to what we have and pray for more personal relationships to develop with the help of our Lord.  Now is the time to open our hearts and forgive what needs to be forgiven and work towards improving all personal relationships believers or not.   I can only speak for myself but my life is better with strong beliefs and a close family relationship.

Happy Thanksgiving to all and may you be blessed at this special time in our lives.

A happy and blessed Thanksgiving holiday to all.  Let us all be thankful to our Lord above for all we have in this world.

The richest person in the world is not the one with gold and silver, but the one with God and family as his treasure.

To those serving our country in harms way overseas (either in the miltary or as civilian contractors) that won't be with family this Thanksgiving, God bless you and bring you home safe soon.

Thanks Greg, my prayer for us is that we would live our lives like that every day and not just a couple of days out of the year.
