CB antenna on the 2014 models
« on: November 29, 2013, 03:43:16 PM »

Is the CB antenna on the left or right side of the 2014 tour pak? I like the shorty antenna's and trying to figure out witch is witch? The new shorty antenna's come separate, one for the radio and one for the CB but look the same. Is their a difference?

It should be different and your CB reception will not be good if you use the wrong antenna. You should have two different part numbers for the antennas

If you look close you will see one has letters CB on it and the other FM/AM near the base.

Thank you everyone, I have the new shorty's installed. I even followed the directions and added Loctite to the threads. Mentioned the Loctite to the parts counter guy and he told me that most customers don't use it, he also told me that a lot of customers loose their antenna's. I used 243, the directions call for 262. I think it will be OK. the new shorty antenna's should come with a small foil tube of Loctite just in case the customer does not have it. I wonder how often the dealer tech's use Loctite on the antenna's?

Perfect timing for me on this post.  I was planning on getting the shorty's, too!

They look great!    :apple:

I am not questioning, it's my guess that you know more about this than I do: with that said, It sounds like Harley planned on the use of the shorty antenna's. This is copied from their instructions. I have no clue what the load coil is but must assume it helps the antenna work for CB's, I would also assume that they built something into the bike or that new shorty antenna to still get the job done. Here comes the jabs about that terrible word "assume". Just hope this information helps. I thought about the hidden antenna system that goes inside the fairing but noticed it was only for the normal radio antenna, if I was going to leave one up might as well leave two and have them shorter.

Copied from the instructions
2009 and later models DO NOT require use of a load coil.
Separate purchase of LOCTITE® 262 THREADLOCKER AND
SEALANT is required for installation of this kit. Loctite is available
from a Harley-Davidson dealer.

I've done a lot of testing with different antennas, ie. I added a cb to my bike. The shorties will work fine, mounted on the tour packs, but not as well as the taller ones. CB's reception is not something your going to use miles away from the other bikes. A couple 100 yards (line of sight) is all your going to get. And yes, stay away from the hidden antennas. They will work but you'll only a couple of bike lengths away. You should be fine with the shorties, just didn't want you to think the reception would be the same. And yes, the shorties look much better. If it were me I'd go with the shorties also.

Part of the reason I did not go with the hidden antenna in the fairing was my concern over all the other electronics; I added the XM module with their antenna in the fairing, with the XM antenna and all the other electronics I just felt it made sense to keep the antennas and electronics separate. I appreciate the kind words on the shorty, especially now that I have them installed  :2vrolijk_21:
