Amp Upgrade for the FLHTCUSE7 ?
« on: December 03, 2013, 07:37:06 PM »

I just upgraded my speakers to the J&M Rokker speaker set (5" rear and 7" in the fairing).  My problem is when I asked about upgrading the 35 watt amp under the tour pack they said it would basically screw with the radio and the controls.  I ride a lot and use my iPod exclusively so losing iPod control is not an option for me.  Anybody know of a way to increase the power WITHOUT losing what I have?

I have seen other posts from a time or two, but it didn't really address my question?  (I think  :confused5:)

Thanks in advance!!!

That doesn't sound right. Changing out the amp should have nothing to do with the ipod or radio controls.

You might contact J&M directly, john@jmcorp.com he is very hands on.

J&M should be able to hook you up with a plug and play solution to get you some more watts.

When it comes time to purchase, Eastern Performance Cycles has good pricing.

I had spoken to a rep there and he said the amp is integrated with the radio controls. :nixweiss:

Does not sound right, the amp should have nothing to do with the IPod controls. Talk to John at J&M.

I sent him an email last night.  Since I bought the speakers directly from J&M, he'll know who the salesperson was that told me I could not do anything with the amp.  Stay tuned... :computer:

Update:  John at J&M responded with an email today and had one of the techs call me within hours.  I have a solution and a 250 watt amp on the way.  John emailed again that the amp was shipped out today.  That's service folks.  Thanks Jim for the tip.   :bananarock: :bananarock: :bananarock: :bananarock:

Where do you mount the amp? Does it replace the one under the tour pak, or do you mount it inside the fairing? I'm thinking about upgrading my amp and speakers this winter.

Curious about that as well.  I'm toying with the idea of making the TP removable, but I really don't want to lose the stereo (and there's no damn way I'm putting the amp in a saddlebag).

Where do you mount the amp? Does it replace the one under the tour oak, or do you mount it inside the fairing? I'm thinking about upgrading my amp and speakers this winter.

I'll be installing the amp this weekend and posting pics of the process.  Going through the instructions and watching a short video on the wiring part, the amp under the tour pack stays and powers just the rear pod speakers.  The front speakers are powered by the amp which will go under the fairing.

The amp has an included bracket to mount the amp to the radio.  Modules have to be relocated pending the number.  I have three mods so I have to relocate some or all under the radio.  That in my opinion will be the painful part.  Once that is done, they have a harness kit that provides all the terminals and wire ties to make for a professional job.  It is extra money but a time saver to be sure.  Also, by using their kit it makes it simple to remove the amp and restore the factory amp if you want to relocate the amp to a new bike (nice thinking i believe).

One other note,  the amp comes with wiring for (4) speakers.  By leaving the tour pack amp on the rear speakers it allow for expansion of two more speakers in the lowers.

Oh, one other installation note: the amp powers directly from the battery, so you have to pull the tank or what I do which is to remove the bolts and lift it up and fish it through.  Sometimes I use a piece of soft pine 1x1 to hold the tank at the screw-hole flanges to keep it high enough.  Some folks say to just yank the tank, but I leave things alone unless I have to.

More later as I install the system......

Not completely off base actually.  If the CUSE7 amp issue is anything like the CUSE8 (sure sounds like it is), they might have been talking about removing / replacing the tour pack amp, not adding to it.  When you disconnect the amp from under the tour pack, it does affect the iPod and hand controls related to the head unit.  This is unique to the CUSE8, and sounds like the CUSE7 as well.

If you're simply adding an amp in the fairing to power the fronts and keeping the tour pack amp plugged in, everything should work great!

I made my TP detachable.  This displaced the amp into my saddle bag. I want the amp out of my saddle bag to be replaced by an Arc Audio amp in the fairing, where things should be to begin with.  On the CUSE8, this is not possible without a custom harness, which I discovered during a very frustrating weekend installing the system.  Turns out, the harness provided by Arc Amp will not work for this specific model.  Been working with Brad at Arc Audio and Pete at Soundz Customz regarding this issue over the past few weeks.  Pete is now making a custom harness so I can remove the factory amp completely, stuff a 4-channel in the batwing fairing, upgrade the speakers all the way around, and be done with this.

Also, I can confirm that you won't need to remove the tank.  You can unbolt the rear of the tank, tilt it up, and fish the power/ground leads up the right side of tank in the wire well, behind the front right tank bolt, and direct into the fairing where the rest of the harness goes into it.  It will look factory.

Also confirming your suspicion, finding a new home for the XM and iPod modules inside the fairing is the toughest, most time consuming part.  My CB module now proudly sits atop a wooden shelf in my garage - no room in the fairing, and it will never be used.

Ok. Finally.  Here are the pics from the install.  The install includes the LED light rings on the 7 1/4" fairing speakers.  I have before and after video of the sound quality.  I will post it on YouTube and then share the link here.

1st picture  - prior to the 250 watt amp install.  Note the 3 mods: CB, Sirius and iPod.  The amp package has a bracket for two mods and the 3rd has to be "tucked" somewhere.

2nd Pic - This pic shows the adapter for the 7 1/4" speakers to fit the 5 1/2" fairing openings.  The LED light ring is between the adapter and the tweeter/mid-range grill.
