A question about keys.
« on: December 03, 2013, 09:32:53 PM »

I have an '06 CVO Ultra.

Where on the key is the key number? I am having a painted tour pack done up to match, and want to have the new lock rekeyed to the one that came with the bike. My gal looked at the key and could not find a number. She says it only says Harley stamped on the side of it.

How many digits is the the key?
Is it all numbers or a combination of numbers and letters?
Where on the key itself can they be found?

Thank you.

A dealer can order replacement keys or have a lock matched to your key using the VIN of your bike. I got a matched lock set for my SESG's Tour Pak using the VIN.

Take the key off the ring and pull the black plastic cover off.  You'll see them.

Is that easy to do? I'm having my gal do that and she's 8,000 miles away. If not , I may go with No Ga Hawgs suggestion.

I did it standing at the parts counter when I ordered a new ignition switch for my SERG.  Pretty much slid right off if I remember right.

Don't know when they changed.........my 2000 had removable rubber, my 2009 & 2013 are a harder non-removalable rubber. Had to use the vin on them. If she has to get the Vin off the frame, tell her to be careful. X's & 8's are easy to switch.

I have a good story about the black plastic sliding right off the key....

Bunch of years back (had to be a bunch because I was riding my 2000 Ultra at the time) we were at Mrytle Beach for Bike Week and stopped at the convention center.
For some reason (that I can't recall) I was just carrying the key loose in my pocket, not on a ring or anything, . Anyway we get parked at the convention center (amid literaly thousands of Harley's), lock the bike up, and head in to enjoy the festivities.

Upon returning to the bike later in the day, I reach in my pocket for the key....and low and behold all I come out with is the black plastic cover. No key!  Searched all my pockets...No Key!

At a loss for what to do before the panic set in, I try the tourpack... not a reasonable thing to do because I know I locked it...but it opens right up.

And surprises of surprises there inside the tourpack rested my key on top of several bags of McDonalds garbage.

Apparently when I locked the tourpack the key stayed in the lock and only ther black plastic cover went in my pocket.  Some courtious Harley rider noticed the key hanging out of the side of the tourpack and saved my bike from possibly not be there at all when we came out.

I think the McDonalds garbage was his way of saying, "You're welcome dumbass"

I might not have thought of that but it actually seems like a good idea.  Put something in there unexpected, obvious and that you know isn't yours with the key on top and you're going to find that key immediately.  Otherwise in among normal seemingly untouched "stuff" it'd be easy to do a quick look and think it might not be there.

Dammit, now courtesy will demand I start keeping McDonalds trash to put in other people's bikes to help them out....  ::)

 :cherry:
Back at the 100 year anniversary for HD in Milwaukee,  one of the vendors was offering a lock set up for RK Classics (saddle bags).  I had those locks put on my 2001 RK Classic and they made the lock "match" my ignition key so that I didn't have to carry an extra key for the bags.

How he did it,  I do not know, but they did it quite easily and there were no problems.  :drink:
