13 CVO Road King vs 12 CVO Ultra - Thinking about trading
« on: December 04, 2013, 11:29:08 PM »

My first Harley was a fat boy, which I loved.

Wife wanted a more "comfy" bike, so I upgraded to a 12 Ultra CVO.  I really don't care for the tour pack, so I did a removable tour pack delete.

I like the bike pretty much, but the wife doesn't really like the color.  Yellow and Gray.   We looked at a 14 Road King in green, but I hate the fact it has no music, but we both love the color.

I found a 13 Road King in Blue, which I love the color of as well.   The 13 has the stereo.

There are things I like about the ultra, I don't mind the fairing, even though I thought I wouldn't like it originally,   I like the nav, heated seats and grips.

There are things I like about the RK.  The Wheels, the more fat boy like look.  Doesn't look so "old"

I have never ridden a RK though.  Is the handling better / worse?

I could probably get some different wheels for the Ultra,  and a smaller seat like the RK.  And it would look pretty good I think.  I'm just mixed on if I would be going "backwards" by going to a RK.

Anyone that has went either way and regretted / not regretted, etc...

I've got an 11 Ultra and a 13 RK, and there are some differences that you have to take into consideration.

We use the RK for shorter trips, generally under 200 miles total.  We use the Ultra for longer rides.

Both have stereos, cruise, ABS, but the RK doesn't come with GPS (I added it to my RK), heated grips or seats, intercom system, tour pack.

I like that the RK can be easily made into a solo seated, windscreenless bike for those nice days where I'm going for a shorter ride. Handling wise the RK is lower and lighter, so it's more enjoyable in traffic and twisty roads whereas the Ultra offers more stability and comfort on the open road.

Bottom line, you have to decide which one suits your needs best, both emotionally and objectively. The RK can be made very close to an Ultra but you can't make a RK out of an Ultra. Good luck with your decision!

Why don't you just have your ultra painted to a color/s that both you and your wife like...you'll end up having a one of a kind and it will probably be cheaper then trading. JMO!!

Tweak your Ultra until it is a perfect scoot for you. Then keep it for ever, and let it become a member of the family.

Reverse for me...I went from a SERK to the SE Ultra.  Not sure I could have gone an Ultra to the RK.  Loved the SERK, but love the SE Ultra even more for the reasons you listed.  Tour pack is now detachable, SG seat.  Secretly, I wish I had both bikes - RK for those stripped down short rides, and the Ultra for our longer trips.

JMHO
You have to have a sit down with your wife and decide what's important when it comes to riding.
We've been from Street Glide to Ultra Classic our first two years riding, and then later to a Tri-Glide which we thought was our final purchase. Well the Tri-Glide just didn’t cut it for our tastes as we really missed the two wheeled ride; major difference. We traded the Tri-Glide for 13 CVO Road King, and rode it two weeks before we knew that was a mistake. Fortunately we were very lucky to be able to trade the Road King back for a 13 CVO Ultra.

1.   The Road King has a great paint-job but doesn’t have the long distance comfort of an Ultra.
2.   The Road King is lighter and more nibble.
3.   The cost to add items to the Road King was far greater than purchasing a loaded Ultra.

We love ours and hope you find what fits your style whether it’s the Road King or Ultra. Good luck!

I started with two RKs (a Classic and a CVO) and then went to a CVO SG.  I really liked the RKs, but can't see myself going back.  I like the tunes and the comfort the batwing provides (ie, less wind).  On the RK Classic, I didn't care for having saddle bags that couldn't be locked. JM2C.

To me I could not wrap my head around going from a 12 CVO Ultra to a 13 CVO Road King. In a perfect world I could have two CVO's and a 13 CVO Road King in Blue would for sure be my choice for a second bike.

It depends if you want a full blown touring bike or a classic cruiser that's at home on the back roads or the open hiway. For several 600 miles days strung together your bike wins easily. A 600 mile day once in awhile the Road King will hold its own. The bike does need a better seat at the very least. I'm saving for a Corbin.
I like the blue better also.

I have the 14SERK added tour pak. Love the ride and for riding solo I think it as comfortable as a Ultra. I have a Mustang Seat and added a Klock Werks  shield, I ride 500 to 600 mile days and love the bike. I also have a Cardo with ear plugs for Music NO wind noise and much easier to listen to without wind and mufflers around.  But everyone sees riding a little different. That is what makes this so much fun.  Demoed a Ultra for a week and loved the bike but when I got back on the SERK  I just love not having a car dash board in front of me .  But I ride solo and my wife has her own bike .     If I had to ride 2 up I would get the Ultra      Billy

In a perfect world, I would have 2.

I like the idea of the ultra for long trips, but to be honest, the longest trips I take is getting up and doing a day with friends.  I have a full time job in car sales, a side business selling late model mustang parts, and 2 mustangs I drag race.   So I don't really get to do those long trips.  I could get on my fat boy and go for a day of riding for 8-10 hours with no problems, so I think I'd be ok on the RK.

I thought about paining the bike, I have a great guy locally that could do a great custom job on it.   I priced out the wheels from the RK too.  I love the wheels a ton more than the wheels on my ultra.  I like them more than just about any aftermarket wheel I've come across.

To paint the bike and add the wheels, looking at right about 5k.   I can go to the RK and I stay where I'm at.  They are trading me even up for mine.  I know the RK new stickered at 30k, where mine stickered for 35 or so I believe.  I paid 31 for it new, which I thought was good.    Mine is a year older with 3k more miles on it 3900 vs 900 on theirs.

Here are some pics of what I'm working with right now.

I'll have to double check, but I thought the bags could be locked on the 13

The bags do lock on the 2013 SERk. That's a nice looking Ultra you have there. I'd Consider trading my SERK for that or a SESG.

First CVO Ultra I've seen with straight pipes!
To answer your question, having owned ultras, roadkings, streetglides and roadglides over the years, it really depends on how your riding preferences evolve.
1. First, if you do a lot of 2-up riding then a removable tourpak is nice for your passenger. I see you have a low sissy bar on your ultra which is better than nothing but not really great for a backrest. Also if you do week long trips or carry a lot of gear, a tourpak is great.
2. If you love your music, a fairing is better since you have a head unit.
3. On the other side, if you enjoy hotrodding around and ride the twisties or are "less is more" kind of guy then a roadking might be the ticket.
So now for my personal preferences for whatever they are worth. I love roadkings and always have one around. My last 3 roadkings have been police bikes that I modify to my preferences and I took one for a solo 12 day trip this summer. I also love my cvo roadglide. It handles like a roadking, has great storage and to my eyes, its one of the prettiest bikes Harley has ever made. I usually take it for long trips and when I ride 2-up. Harley didn't make a rg for 2014 and I sure hope they bring it back in the next couple of years as this will be my fairing bike of choice.
I have owned 3 ultras and 1 street glide over the years. Just kind of grew away from the handlebar mounted fairing but enjoyed them. If you love the batwing, a streetglide  might be the bike for you. You can get a 2013 cvo or a 2014 sgs.
