Free flowing air filter
« on: December 07, 2013, 06:06:22 PM »

What is everybody using for a free flowing air filter without changing the stock look? I have searched and it appears that K&N doesn't make one for 2013 w/stock cover

I'm confused.  Doesn't the 2013 CVO RK come with the Ventilator exposed element air cleaner?  I was under the impression it did, and if so you already have a high flow air cleaner.  And K&N does make an element for it; your Harley dealer sells it as part number 29400022A.

Guess thats my bad, then. Mine does have the exposed filter. It looks like stainless & all of the high flows I have dealt with in the past were a shade of red. Live & learn or in my case learn alot more than I live.

The filter that comes with the bike has a washable paper element stock.  It isn't oiled, therefore it doesn't look red like a K&N.  If it were mine, I'd just use the filter element that came stock until it becomes worn or can't be cleaned any more and then replace it with the K&N oiled filter.

Thats exactly what I'm going to do, Jerry!! I think it looks much better un-oiled.

The problem is that after about 5,000 miles it won't look better any more because it will be grungy....then you will like the look of the K&N better.  I have the stuff to clean my stock filter but haven't gotten around to doing it yet. I figure if I always have a couple clean stock filters I can swap them in and out with the K&Ns when they are being cleaned. My primary filter though is the K&N on both bikes.

Jerry

How often can the stock filter be washed before it's worn out?  I know a person who changes the stock paper filter for a new on every time.  I agree that the pinkish red color of the K&N oil doesn't look very good on an exposed element on a lot of bikes.

K&N oil filters are advertised to last up to 1,000,000 miles, if I stand correct.

That's like 40 times the life of the average HD stock lifters life.

Mine has a warning on the filer housing that says "Dry filter, Do Not Oil". The part # on the housing doesn't match what Jerry said. It looks like a old HD #. Had to walk back from my barn, so I can't remember it but it was like *****-06. Did I get chitted?

29670-09 is the number of the oem filter in my '12 cuse7. Has the same wording.

no, you didn't.  used to be you got a k&n filter with the se kit.  then hd started mfg there own (well, having someone make it for them anyway).  was a white filter, as you've seen.  problem was, it isn't near as sturdy as the k&n.  keep an eye on it, lots of folks have seen large chunks of the filter element missing.  if/when it gets to that point, replace it with the k&n.  if you don't like the red look of it, you can cover it with the hd rain sock.

If you follow the directions for washing the stock filter...it's in your owner's manual...it will last through several cleanings.  Do NOT try and blow it dry with an air compressor...just shake out the excess water and let it air dry overnight.  Eventually, it will wear out, then replace it with the K&N version.

The OLD round filters that came with the SE "Stage I" kits were paper, and were indeed POS.
