All good advice but the first thing I would do before I left the dealer would be to get the syn3 out of the bike.

Also, it's a good idea to allow the engine to brake...in other words, don't be afraid to downshift and let the engine slow you down rather than the brakes.  It's been called "fluttering" the rings...the most important thing is just to vary the engine speed as much as possible.  If you take two lanes instead of interstate, that shouldn't be a problem.  The first 50 is the most critical.  Staying under 3500 shouldn't be a problem, and changing the rpm with the 6 speed will be easy.

In this cool weather, the Syn3 will be fine 'till you get her home, but I would agree with all the others here...get some good oil products in all three holes at the 1K.  Some of the dealers (like mine) will not want to change your oil to a product you want to use.

Oh...one other thing....make sure they have topped the oil level off.  The bikes are not shipped full, so check the crankcase level before you leave the dealership.  Don't ask how I know this... ;)  Mine was almost a quart low.

Dude,

You got great advise.  You will enjoy the Heated Grips and Heated Seat on the way home.  Make sure they both work before you leave the Dealership, nothing more frustrating than Heated Grips that do not work.  Mine were never hooked up at the factory.....make sure you know how to work them, some you have to have the accessory switch on, some you do not.  Everyone around you will know if you ride with your Heated Seat on HIGH......you will be bellowing a trail of smoke out of  your long johns!!!!!

Ride her slow the first 50....man the temptation to open her up will be great, but wait until the baby is broken in right!!!!!!  17 more days until mine is shipped, but who's counting!!!!!  It will be a cold ride home, but only for two hours!!!

Have a sfe trip home...

Rhino,

I am going offer some slight modifications with the break in

The first five times you get the bike up and running bring the bike to operating temperature then shut it off ** Don't RIDE IT ** and let it cool to ambient temperature that means you will be able to put your hands on the heads / cylinders before restarting it.

Then when you start your first 50 miles when you bring the bike up in rpm's allow the the bike to do your slowing down for you this will cause the rings to FLUTTER and seat better.   After about your first 10 to 12 miles shut the bike down and let it come to ambient temperature.   I know this sounds really harsh and painful, but it works.  You will do this again after another 10 to 12 miles.   Now you have 25 miles on the bike the next ride is that 25 miles which puts you at 50 miles ... Generally I would be stopping and changing my fluids at this point. I would definately not wait past 100 miles myself to do this as it will allow you to see anything in the oil that maybe troubling.   From there I would follow what Firedood has posted and enjoy it.    I had posted on the site here both S&S's and Zippers break in processes.

Personally whenever possible i bring the bike to a dyno and do my heat cycling there as well as the first 50 miles on the dyno so I can watch temp / use the dyno break and vary the heat.   Costs me about 300 bucks, but in my way of thinking was much better than sitting on the side of the road waiting for the bike to cool or sitting somewhere for an hour at least at the dealer I could people watch look at the parts book and spend a little time shooting the breeze which makes it less painful.

Golly this board is good. Everyone agrees so far.  I was not certain on the downshift issue. I was going to lay off brake downshifts for a while, but the fluttering does make sense, so its added to the list.
and of course the FIRST stop after twenty or so miles for a cooldown, a step or two back to see my baby, and at just about the same time I would be taking my first breath.
Yes, I am going with a reasonably small trip kit, and hope everthing fits, if not, UPS. Glad to see this much support.  Can't wait to go, only 49.5 hours to takeoff.

I just checked the weather again and the rain should clear up by Thursday afternoon and then clear sailing for the rest of the weekend!

Ron,

Before you leave the dealership take your keys outside the dealership over 100 feet away and make sure that both FOB's work when you get near the bike one at a time.   Also Make SURE you keep the barcodes that come with your key's they are important because they are needed to help you program new fob's if you were to lose one or both.  Also if your paying your taxes in North Carolina for a Florida Tag that in Florida the PDI and the Shipping are Taxable ... I just paid an extra 66 bucks to get my tag because they do not charge tax on this in NC.  Its like 6.5 percent on the first 5k then 6 percent I think it is on the remaining balanced.  If your paying here it doesn't matter and please disregard :)

I've always wanted to ask this stupid question. Do you get 2? One for driver one for passenger?

You get one. The passanger has to purchase one from HD.

The bike stuff looks like it's already covered, but for luggage you can pick up a $5 suitcase at Good Will for the flight.  Either toss it out or donate it back to Good Will once your bike is packed.
