Extra riding lights
« on: December 08, 2013, 12:42:58 PM »

I am considering adding a couple of driving lights either on the fork legs or the "engine crash bar".

My concern is the looks and really don't want to make the MC uglier than it is  :pumpkin:

Have anyone done this and do you have a picture to share?

The only decent-looking auxiliary lights I've seen are the fender or caliper mounted Motolights, which are ridiculously expensive for what they are.

home made "motolights". Dyna turn signal, an extra swivel bracket from MoCo and new led guts from either Oznium or Superbright leds. Turn signals came from fleabay. I have about $150 in the whole project.

Check these out. They have the caliper mounts also and a lot cheaper than the motolights!!

Thanks Gent's.
Lots of good info. I do prefer to install on the crash bar but the fork legs might be my best option.

The advantages to fork mounted lights is that you have two lights that will move up and down with the road and from side to side so you draw more attention to oncoming motorist versus engine guard lights which are more stationary. That is a bigger issue for us Roadglide riders where the headlights have less movement than an Electraglide rider. Fork mounted lights are farther from the headlight so they give you a triangle of light that shows up from a distance. Do an experiment sometime and place three lights a distance from each other then back up, see how far they tend to blend into one light versus putting the three lights farther apart then back up, you will find they stay separate for a greater distance thereby oncoming motorist can better judge your size etc.

After trying a few different types, I found these little babies, real happy they perform very well, best I've come across.

Nice integration. I like the compact look of it.

Are you seeking to improve your forward vision, or are you seeking to make yourself more visible to others?  If all you want to do is pizz off oncoming drivers and riders, then the caliper mounted lights will be fine.  If you want to improve your own ability to see, mounting the lights on a sprung portion of the bike up a bit higher will be much better.

I know there are a lot of Motolights fans around here, but I'm not one of them.  I hate having a bike with those things coming at me even during the day, and at night they are even more obnoxious and irritating as they constantly bounce around with each ripple or pebble in the road.  I place these things in the same category as excessively loud pipes; they don't improve safety as their proponents usually claim, but they do irritate the living hell out of others.

I am seeking to improve forward vision during dark hours. Lots of deer and dark up here so this is for me to be able to see what's in front of me.

You have any stats to back up your claim?
I would guess not.

You may not be a fan but per you,
Quote
they do irritate the living hell out of others Jerry.
means to me that at least you notice them and the bike they are attached to.

For me I'd rather irritate a few and be seen than be run over by the one that didn't see me.
Chill a bit Jerry, it's going to be a long winter to start it off so grumpy.
