Stranded by DEAD BATTERY
« on: December 28, 2013, 11:07:26 AM »

So, Me and the Misses were stranded by an "all of a sudden" battery issue -- dead battery, that is.

Happened at 9:00 pm. so nothing opened.  Call HOG for Jump/Tow -- Very odd, their response was " we don't jump start motorcycles"...... WHAT? Weird..... if you ask me..

Had to tow at the cost of $113 to home -- nothing open, best option.

So, now the battery is gone (2011 CVO Ultra, 18k mi).  Reviews say HD battery is crap.

Looking for a good battery recommendation and part number.

Thanks in Advance.

Do you use/keep battery on a Battery Tender? Reason I ask is I've had an OEM battery last me 7+ years before replacing... Unless you are in a climate that allows or you ride the bike daily motorcycle battery's are more susceptible to need replacing sooner because of discharging while sitting. No matter what brand battery you purchase if you don't keep it charged by riding or maintain it on a Battery Tender you will be replacing them sooner (every couple years).

seems that the  Deka  ETX30L battery might be the ticket.

http://www.cvoharley.com/smf/index.php?topic=71539.0

And as mentioned keep the bike on a smart charger when not being ridden, that will help the battery last longer for you since the newer bikes seem to have more electronic crap creating a constant drain on the system - ECM, Entertainment/infotainment system and the alarm system that is constantly looking for the fob's handshake signal.
I keep all the bikes plugged in I typically get 5 to 6 years out of my batteries before I replace them.

Have had great luck with Odyssey batteries in my last bike and various other toys over the years. The one in my last bike survived a 95" motor with compression releases that I rarely used for 8 years and counting. It was a softail and this battery has a metal jacket around it which protects it from the heat of the oil on three sides of the battery. It pretty much sits in a 220 degree oven on the softails. Here is a link to the one you would need.  http://sepbatteries.com/pc925lmj-odyssey-battery?gclid=CKHj3uq04q4CFQ2FhwodmFnKYA

I think the HD batteries are just fine. I change them every 4 years plus keep on the tender.

What reviews say that the H-D batteries are crap? :nixweiss:  I've had great "luck" with them, but I make my own luck by keeping them on battery tenders any time they're not being ridden.

I have had about 3-4 years on Harley battery even without a battery tender. I had better life from them than the cheaper ones. I had good life from Sears batteries too.
A battery tender will extend battery life. When they do crap out usually with no warning they just stop. Is your charging system good? No shorts in system to slowley drain battery over time?

Keep mine on a tender, always buy a Harley battery, get great life out of them, well over 4 years.

Why did you not push (bump) start the MC?

You would have been on your way in seconds.

Don't think that is possible w/EFI. :nixweiss:

I had an 04 Flhtc with a 2 and 1/2 yr old battery (HD) always use a Batt tender . I was coming home from a good 300 mile ride from Vermont  and Bike Died  40 miles from home, dead Battery.Battery had shorted internally. Harley batteries are Very Good  but not for the price. I change my batteries every  3 yrs now  and I buy deka for half the price. When I change my battery I put it in my Tractor or my Moto guzzi Eldorado. And I notice these batteries are still good after 6 to 7 yrs.But not worth it for me in  my Harley because I do a lot of out of state riding.

Keep your bike on a tender and swap out the battery every 5 years and you will not have battery issues.  SJ Ron :)

I would think that they would at least tow it to the nearest dealer (or home if closer?) since you were disabled.  If you got towed to a dealer you could have had it jump started there.

Did you have to pay the full price of the tow?

Good point but I think it might be possible. (Have not tried it on my HD). I can restart my EFI car without problems rolling it and putting it in gear, and I can restart EFI airplane engines with just the spinning prop while airborne. (Although airplanes have magnetos so that is not a fair comparison)

I can't try it on the HD until the snow is gone but I will give it a shot and report back in April  :2vrolijk_21:
