I had more than a quarter mile downhill, actually got up to 15 mph and still nothing.  I had left my headlights on by accident and drained a nearly new battery.  We eventually jumped it and I'm still using it after more than two years.

Since, I've converted all my lighting to LED.

It would be cool to know how to push jump-start one of these bikes, but I suspect very difficult if possible at all.
Why wouldn't it be ok to jump from just a 12 volt battery w/o the vehicle running.  How could that hurt anything?

Usually, the battery is not completely dead.  If you wait an hour or 2, you will gain the juice you need to run the gas pump and the ECM.  Never done it with a 110 though.  May have to push real hard.  ;)

If the battery is completely dead as in 0 volts, forget it.  It will act like a near short circuit and the alternator will never have the juice for the ECM and pump.  All the current will be drained to the battery...

I've used jumper cables to start both carb and EFI bikes; it works fine.  For a roll-start on an EFI bike, the battery has to have enough juice to run the ECM, engine sensors, and the throttle body stepper motor.

The service manager made an interesting statement yesterday.  He said to remove the 40 amp fuse during the winter, no tender, then a 2 amp trickle charge 6hr before use in spring.  He doesn't like the tenders, but I do.  He says with all the security stuff on the bike, it can drain the battery over the winter if the fuse is left in.  He also said for bikes with the security system, to pull the fuse while trailering the bike a long distance because while in the trailer the lights are constantly going off because the bumps make the bike think it's being stolen.  Interesting comments

H-D security system has a 'transport' mode to prevent what you describe while in a trailer (see owner's manual for details).  Or you could just put the fob in close proximity while in the trailer and disable the security.

since he's a service manager and is not well versed in the transport mode, would make me suspect of what else he isn't well versed in.  the drain on the battery due to the security stuff is very minimal and the battery tender would very easily overcome this.  wonder what his reasoning for the drain on my lawnmower battery is over the winter.  i don't have security on my mower :D

Not sure I would service there again. He obviously don't know what he is talking about. Hopefully they have great mechanics.

Interesting comments about the response from HOG.  I am just looking into joining and road assist was one of the selling points.   :-*

HOG is great if you live /ride near metropolitian areas. Dropped mine 5yrs ago after sitting 3hrs on side of road, then being told tow to nearest garage only> WTF?? And I wasn't close to BF Eqypt.  :confused5:

Sorry to hijack-or continue the hijack, has anyone used the towing protection that comes with ESP??? Or does ESP just reimburse you after the fact if the repair is approved???  Also what about their so called trip interruption compensation??? Anyone had any experience with that???

Damn,  I've continued my HOG coverage for many, many years just to have the "tow" coverage that comes with it.  I have never been associated with a particular local HOG group.

Several years ago at the Myrtle Beach Spring Rally,  (not discovered until much later,  my stator wire got broken)....We were at SBB in Murrells Inlet and a "jump" from another bike only made it backfire and not continue running.  Finally got thru to the service provided via HOG and they finally showed up and towed me to Conway where my bike trailer was.......since at the time I was still living in Raleigh.

The length (milage wise) of that tow was considerably farther than getting towed to the H.D. dealership.  Maybe it's a matter of just what tow outfit you use,  or maybe you'all are telling me it "aint what it used to be".............I do have AAA coverage if that is better. :nixweiss:

Yes of course a stick shift. Would obviously not work on an automatic.
