CVO Head valve size
« on: December 28, 2013, 06:27:22 PM »

Got a 2003 FLHRSE, CVO103ci, in the shop. Heads have been "ported" and what appears to be Black Diamond valves installed. However, the valve measurements do not match the specs I have for black nitrided valves from either Kibblewhite or AV&V. OEM part numbers show these valves to be exclusive to 2003-2006 CVO 103 engines. Where can I find the specs on the OEM valves, PN-18044-98 (EX) and 18045-98 (IN). I work in a dealership and YES, I have called HD Tech Services. No help. Also, I measured the heads to find a 93cc chamber volume. Anyone know OEM measurement? Thanx!

Not sure this is what you are looking for, but p/n 18045-98 are 1.900" intake valves and p/n 18044-98 are 1.625" exhaust valves...  Stock CVO unmolested 103 heads measure approx. 95 cc's...

None of the vendors make a direct replacement.
1.9 x 1.625, 4.410 x 4.525" L measured from used valves which may have been tipped but I doubt it. Personally I use other AV&V valves modified.

edit
remeasured on granite plate with calibrated height gauge
valves have been tipped
Sachs numbers are correct

1.900" intake = 4.413" ol
1.625" exhaust = 4.530" ol
AVV makes a popular 1.944" intake = 4.444" ol, with a slight oversized stem diameter. If your heads were modified perhaps they were used. They also have a full dished face.

WOW! Thanx for the input, guys! At least, now, I know what I'm working with. Really do appreciate it. Following is what I uncovered:

Intake = 1.977 with a stem protrusion of 2.065
Exhaust = 1.625 with a stem protrusion of 2.072

Factory spec on stem protrusion is 1.990-2.024

Intake overall length = 4.395
Exhaust OAL = 4.490

After buying a new FLTRX with Stage 4 (except, he substituted the SE-260 cams in place of the SE-259 because he has the SE-260 in this 2003 FLHRSE, and loved it!) and riding it enough to compare to the '03, he has decided the '03 is down on power.

After passing a leakdown test with Frt @ 3% and Rr @ 4%, I decided the engine was healthy but not properly tuned. Baseline Dyno: 102HP and 100TQ with a scattered AFR plot. Running ThunderMax Autotune.

Customer wants heads and cyls pulled for Diamond Cut, that's when I found these specs.

Using the c/r calculator, THANKS to BIG BOYZ HEAD PORTING, with a measured 93cc head chamber, measured .058 gasket thickness, measured 3cc valve reliefs, measured 3.935 gasket ID and OEM flat top pistons sitting .004 down in bore, I come up with a static c/r of 8.8:1. Add the SE-260 cams and it becomes7.52:1. I know this is nowhere near the combustion pressure needed for these cams, just trying to figure the best (read 'cost effective') way to get to "at least" 10:1 static CR.

The factory SE Supplement manual shows a machined relief around the circumference of the chamber, akin to the 103+ head, to form a squish band with the High Comp 103+ pistons. The heads I have, have no relief/bevel. If I knew, for sure, that the measurement from head gasket surface-to-rocker box gasket surface was the same for OEM 103 and SE 103, then a measurement would tell me if the SE heads had been milled.

You know the issues and also sound knowledgeable as to how to solve them.

Regarding this..
akin to the 103+ head, to form a squish band with the High Comp 103+ pistons.
The 103+ has a significantly different chamber / squish band, albeit open. The 103+ is segmented and the 103 CVO is a chamfer at the edge of a hemi.

Thanks, Dewey, for the clarification on the chamber/squish band issue. I've been a dealer tech for 23 yrs and maybe 98% of the heads I see are current production units, including a few SE units. My current service mgr pushes as much SE as possible, especially the CNC Ported factory heads. It has been a struggle to get him to accept using adjustable pushrods and Bob Wood cams/lifters. Unfortunately, I was doing a stint in an independent shop from 1999-2006 so I had my hands on very few Twin Cams, especially the early CVO's. As our machine shop facilities are limited to a Kwik Way boring bar and power hone, a mig welder, an old Sioux valve refacer (I'm the only one who knows how to use it!) and a drill press, I think I'm going to send the heads to Eric @ AMS (our LOCAL machine shop) with the requirements I need to meet.

Yes, we (our dealership) have installed quite a few of the CNC Factory heads, mostly in the Stage 4 kit w/SE-259E cams. It is hard to get some people to "color outside the lines". There are two dyno tuners here, myself being one, and it has been difficult to accurately evaluate the CNC Factory heads. I invite logical and unbiased reviews about these heads from anyone who has had any experience with them. Thanx again!

We tune for several dealers in the FW/ Dallas area and we have tuned many of the factory CNC heads. Install them as well for one dealer ( we do all of the performance work for them). We do a fair amount of machine work at this point for two dealers.. So I get to see more SE stuff that I did in the past. It has been interesting to say the least. The heads thus far seem to work decent and make OK power. Valve size is what it is and they where set to be used with stock cast pistons for valve pocket size.  I see that they could be worked over to offer more and with a simple valve swap and some extra hand work they can offer more. The question comes up though if  the package can take advantage of the extra work and cost worth gains is worth the effort.

For a bolt on head I feel they offer good power.  Valve size a bit small on the intake side and valve springs are nothing to get excited about. We remove them here.. Valve seat work has been good, fitment of valve to guide  good, the chambers have been very close if not spot on for CC volume.
