CVO rear shocks
« on: January 02, 2014, 04:17:30 PM »

got a brand new 14 CVO ultra ltd. wow!
my wife says we are hitting bottom in the rear, and hurting here back. we have after market shocks on the 06 we just retired, and didn't have that issue.
are there any suggestions as to the rear shocks to put on my new ride to smooth it out?
i hear the legend air shocks are amazing but don't really want to get that crazy.

They have several adjustments according to the weight of the rider, passenger, and cargo added. Manufacturer's recommended specs are in your manual. Wife and I ride 2 up 90% of the time and never have any trouble. Only trouble I have is solo I think they are too stiff completely backed off.

Did you check to see if there was any air pressure in the system ?   When I purchased my bike, the rear shocks were at 0 psi.   Pump the system up to 30 - 40 psi and it should stop the bottoming out and smooth things out for you and your wife.

Not sure if you have the same shocks as my Road glide but if you do take your left saddle bag off and crank the adjustment almost all the way up. I made the same mistake at first. After reading the owners manual(I know, it's a man thing, don't tell my wife!)I realized with our combined weight they should be set at 13 and they were set at 0.

If I am correct, they changed out the stock air shocks from your 2006 ultra vs the newer models. You will need to put more air in your 2014 CVO ultra vs your 2006 ultra model. Like Tim has already mention, you may want to add air 30-40 lbs (pending wait of yourself, BSR, and luggage/gear weight) as apposed to your older bike which I believe was much less pressure.

Just a reminder. Use a hand pump with a gauge don't use your air compressor.  It don't take much to pump them up.  Your air compressor will most likely damage them.

Toss the stock shocks, it's crap. I ditched mine and put on a set of Öhlins. Night and day.

I paid less than $1K and that is the best money I ever spent on a HD.

I wrote about this in another thread.

Seems in some markets the 2014 Limited comes with the air shocks rather than the premium shocks. The dealer delivered mine with 9 PSI in them and the bike was thumping and banging over bumps. Cranked them up to 35/40 and the bike rides a lot better over our typically choppy Aussie back roads, although probably not as good as I expected it should.

Aftermarket shocks will be on my shopping list soon

What? So the SGS comes with Premium adjustable shocks and the CVO limited has AIR????? LOL wtf?

Well that blows. I recommend you ditch them but until then I ran about 40-45 lbs of air 2 up on my 09 FLHX.

I agree with you on that blows.  That was one of things I hated about my 09 FLHX was riding two up it bottomed out quite often even at 50lbs of air in them. I was told by the sales person that the CVO Limited had the adjustable shocks but come to find out it didn't.  I suppose if they don't work well then that will be on my list of things to replace.

Sad that we have to spend that kind of change on suspension on these so called top tier bikes IMO.
