Protection from Salt Air
« on: January 04, 2014, 11:18:23 PM »

Ok, so I live on the beach in Florida, and my last 2 bikes started showing signs of corrosion and rust after only a few months. I just bought a new bike and would like to protect it from the salt air.
Does anyone know if theirs something I can spray on or do to the bike to protect it before I even take delivery of it.  Someone suggested vasoline on a q-tip on all the bolts, but that doesent help the chrome and engine and all the other metal on the bike.
Thanks all.

You can use something like Salt Away, but that washes stuff off, it's not a protectant.  Best you can probably do is wax everything.

What do I do with the silicone spray it on everything and wipe it off, or hose it off???
Wouldn't leave residue or something?

I live near the beach on the "Left Coast."   I wax the bike frequently and try to wipe the bike down after any significant ride and any ride near the beach.  The best product I've used is called Protect All.

Sorry, wish I could help...

Even though I also live near water,

I don't have the same problem.

 ;D

Good luck with finding the right solution.

Cosmoline.............Isn't that the stuff that the armed services has used for (centuries).  Kinda when you're not gonna use something for x number of years and you wanna make sure it doesn't rust away. ::)

Two products come to mind. You need to seal the finish from the elements. Wax, of course, is probably the easiest. But must be applied regularly. What might help is something more permanent. Look up 5-Star Shine ( 5starshine.com ) or Opti Coat Pro ( opti-coat.com ). These products are permanent sealers that need less maintenance. The Opti-Coat is highly reviewed by car guys.      JoeS

Thank you Joe, I will look into it, I'm not much for washing or waxing my bike, but the last 2 bikes i owned really started to look like crap after only a few months.  Even the cylendars and head find were pitting and corroding. I wanna do something before I even ride it home.

And was the Cosmoline a joke or what?  I never herd of it.

Thanks guys,
Lance

Well, that's your problem right there, Vern....At the very least, if you live near salt air, the bike should be rinsed regularly.  If not, expect corrosion...period.

I rinse in every couple of days but the corrosion and rust and chrome pitting is terriable.
A dealer I was talking to was telling me that had a treatment that cost $1000 that they apply to the bike that would protect it and I wouldent have to wax it for 3 years, it sounded like BS to me and just another way of getting more money out if me similar to when car dealers used to try to charge for undercoating, which they never did but got paid for it.
