Advice on 2012 FLHUCSE7getting new engine cases under warranty
« on: January 05, 2014, 01:28:01 AM »

My rear cylinder has leaked oil at the base of the rear cyclinder twice now. Dealership says they contacted the motor company who decided to send new engine cases.since they replaced an o-ring the first time it showed up at 10k.  My bike now has 20k and I was wondering if there was any upgraded parts I should buy to let them install while they have it apart. I thought I read that there were new lifters with bigger rollers but the SM checked and said the 2014 CVO comes with the exact same lifters as mine. I am happy with the power of the engine since i did the Fullsac header and tune so I am not really interested in performance parts as much as I am in improving reliability. Any suggestions?

If they're replacing the cases under warranty, the labor is already covered.  I'd talk to the dealership and ask them to have the crank pinned and welded or to let you take the flywheel to get it done.  You'll just have to pay for the pinning, welding and balancing but a whole lot of long term motor life comes with that and well worth the money.....especially since the MoCo already has the labor for disasembly and reasembly covered.

I believe this would be the biggest improvement you could make on their dime.

Unfortunately that SM is wrong.  Harley changed the lifters on the 2013 CVO 110"s to the new SE lifter with the larger roller bearing for the roller.

JC is giving you good advice. Just ask him how smooth his bike ran after doing this. Seems to me he said it was as smooth as a H#$da ;D

Are the new lifters backward compatible to the pre 2013 motors?

Thanks JC and Rooster. I will call them tomorrow about the flywheel work and see if they have someone that can do the work. I had thought about gear drive cams but ruled it out because even if my crank runout was in specs at the time I was afraid it would slip later and mess everything up.
Jerry validated what I thought I had read on this site about the new lifters. Even though I still have the stock 110 cam the bigger roller makes sense to me. I will give the SM the part number and get them to go back with the newer design. It's like someone else said since they are going to be doing a tear down it seems like a good time to make some improvements since my plan is to keep this bike a long time after the warranty is up.

I love this site and appreciate the help. Let me know if there is anything else I should consider.

And the 99C lifters that came stock in your 2012 CVO motor may possibly have had the highest failure rate of any MOCO lifter.  It was an incredibly short time from when they were introduced (replacing the 99B lifters) until they were replaced by the current lifter.

Thanks for the info. All the more reason that I don't want it put back together with the original lifters.

If changing the cam on a 2013 110 do you have to upgrade the lifters 0r are the new ones good enough?I know in the past they were a weak point and should be swapped out for S&S or woods etc.

I think the current SE lifters are very good lifters, but if I was going into the cam chest to swap cams, I'd still recommend using the latest premimum S&S lifters...  :2vrolijk_21:

So maybe that's why mine self destructed at only 22k.

How'd you get them to last so long?
The lifters in my 11.5 had a far shorter lifespan.
