Intro from TaxmanHog..part-1
« on: November 16, 2006, 01:08:32 PM »

Howdy folks.

On 11/11/2006 Marie & I were on the road to Manchester NH, enroute to pick
up our newest addition the family.

Our Nephew Brandon was tailing us on his 2002 1200s Sporty, so that I would
have a ride partner for the return trip.

Got to the dealer in what seem like no time at all, Marie was driving so I
know were not speeding, also it was cold this morning, but the sun was
warming up pretty quick, Brandon was freezing his toes & other extremities
off.

The bike was ready, Dave the salesman took my plate and had service folks
bolt it on, while Marie was roaming the boutique looking for the usual
brick-a-brack, I got a couple of filters and a case of oil, I believe in
early oil changes during the initial break-in.

Went through the initial orientation of the bike, this is my first touring
style bike, a lot of buttons & features I needs to study the owners manual
when I get home over the next few days while the soon to arrive rain passes.

Rolled the bike into the sun for a photo shoot of us on the new ride, as
posted earlier this evening. I transferred some of my -stuff- into the
tour-pack,  geared up for the ride home.

The Sporty needs a top-off of a couple of gallons before we go too far, then
were off.

RT-28 south to the airport perimeter road which hooks up with RT-3a,
following 3a for about 10 or some miles of sedate curvy & rolling adjacent
to the Merrimack river.

We reached the intersection of RT-102 no word as to which way RT-3a goes,
instinct & revenue officer rule ONE while in the field & potential lost,
turn right when in doubt.

As it turns out, that was correct, spotted a 102/3 sign just down the way,
bare to the right onto rt-111, travel through the center of Nashua NH, over
to rt-3 jump on the freeway for a sedate 50 mph ride for a couple of miles
to the next exit, Family visit & lunch stop was next on our agenda, thanks
Doris (sil) & Dave (bil) for the great lunch & nice visit.

I reviewed my route plan with Dave, who has plenty of ride experiences in
this part of New England, I had planned to ride a mix of numbered routes
both slow & fast, staying away from heavy populations centers, stop & go
traffic or parades.

Route-111a through the west side of Nashua, onto rt-111 south, to rt-119
then jump of I-495 for a couple of miles of 60 mph riding, jump off 495 onto
rt-85 following that path which runs parallel to 495 offset a couple of
miles to the east, a nice mix of twisty & hilly roads with occasional
signals & down towns, through Hopkinton State park, more nice roads, no wild
rides, today thankfully a few cages were moderating speeds to a range that I
needed to stay at but was tempted to exceed.  When the bike is fully broke
in I plan to visit that path more.

By the time I reach the intersection of 135 & 85, I had about 60+ miles on
the odometer, We headed west on 135 to connect to 495, I wanted to get the
bike through a couple more sedate freeway speed events, keeping in the
neighborhood of 60/65.

Time was also ticking away, I want Marie to get a ride on the bike today,
even if just a few miles, Brandon & I continued to trip on 495 taking it
easy, until we reached RT-1a, I wanted to take the back roads through
Wrentham & Cumberland but there was one hell of a traffic jam, everyone was
going to the mall on this beautiful day!

We continued for a few more miles until reaching RT-1s, then quick change
over to RT-152s, topped of the sporty again by now we have traveled 95
miles, followed 152 until we connected with I-95s reaching home in only a
few more miles.......... [smiley=banana.gif]

Part-2 Originally written 11/11/2006 & posted at NNTP Rec.Motorcycles.Harley

Marie had caged it back via all highway, and only got home less than a half
hour sooner. She was ready to go when we arrived, leathers, helmet & gloves
ready to go, I have to say, she was excited about getting on the back and
going for a ride.

By this time I have gotten a good feel for the handling dynamics of this
beast, I am impressed with the comfort & handling as a solo-ride, now I need
to see how she handles with a passenger.

Rolled out of the driveway down to rt-1n and jump on I-95n for a sedate run
to the center of town, to show the new bike to our riding friends.  The bike
handles nicely with two-up, though I may have to bump up the pressure on the
shocks just a tad. 15lbs is not enough for our full sized butt's.

Received plenty of oooos & ahhhhhhs, especially the paint job, the shades of blue,
chrome & leather, all were interested in the performance of the engine & tranny,
I have to say that I am impressed, even with the sedate riding while going
through break-in.

Marie was loving the comfort of the seat & backrest, how the radio sounded,
80 watts with speed/noise compensating boost.

The sun was getting low on the horizon & the air was getting chilly with the
damp weather approaching from the west, rain is still a good twelve hours
away, but you could feel the chill setting in.

Perfect time to test the heated leather seats, two position switch's, one
for me & one for her, cranked them both up to high, in no time at all our
butt's were toasting! I did not try the heated grips yet, I'll give them a
try Tuesday or Wednesday when the crappy weather passes.

We reached home & put the bike in for the night, it's been a long day, &
time for some diner with friends to celebrating his birthday.

I heard the clunk others have reported during the first cycle of firing the
engine, I can get used to that, it's the nature of the design.

The tranny did not seem to make any unusual noises, the engines valve train
is making a bit of noise, it is diminishing as break-in progress's.

I notice no issues with surging, then again it's pretty cool this time of
year, unlike those who reported the problem during the warmer season..

Overall I am very impressed with the handling & power of the bike, the
engine has a pronounced vibration at standing idle, when ya get moving she
smooth's right out.

The only problem I have, as I sit here,  planning to read the owners manual,
I realize, They gave me the manual for the Screemin Eagle Road King SE-3,
that does not help with the NAV/COM/ENTERTAINMENT system questions I have.

I call them in the morning to see if they can find the ULTRA's owners
manuals laying in the bags of the Road King, and FED-EX it to me.

More performance reports to follow in the next two weeks as weather permits
me to get out & ride.

Part-3  (bring the information current through today 11/16/2006)

The above was our first days experience with the new bike,
again I am all new to this style of bike & riding..

A bit about me....

I have been riding for 26 years starting at the age of 18, used my first bike a
1980 Yamaha XS-1100 Special to commute to Tech school for two years from
Newport R o Warwick RI, then another couple of years riding until 1983
when I sold to my middle brother.

I was bikeless for several years as I started my Civ-service career, in the early days
lived cheeply to the point of only having the XS-11 which I borrowed back from my brother.
Paid off all my student loans, did most of the responsible things in life, got married.......

Jumping to 1997 My second bike in life came along, the 1998 FXSTS, a Black Springer,
I have plenty of miles on the bike over 72,000, mostly rides in & about the New England region,
I made this ride tolerable for Marie by adding the Mustang Wide Regal seat, she was pretty happy with it for years.
I do a lot of my own  wrenching, maintenance, wheel pulls buddy helps me with the tire rassling. etc.

The spring of 2005 I was hot on the idea of getting a CVO VROD, the money the stealers
wanted was too much (at that time), So I started looking on EBAY and located a fantastic
deal on a A-Model which had been hopped up with a 1320cc weisco kit doen by Main Street Motors,
(aka) V-MOD.COM  After acquiring this bike "I" was very happy but Marie was not, she has riden it
only twice and that was in the first two weeks I owned it.

Several friend, who were into touring bikes, convinced me that the next bike had to be for her,
I could not dissagree even the slightest, but If I am gonna be her driver, I want the performance
kick I've become used to with the hopped up EVO & Vrod, The search for a bike which would provide her with
all the creature comforts, and for me all the power to push that beast around.

When I heard about the 110" CVO mounted on the 07 Ultra, I told her this -IS- the bike for -US- [smiley=cherry.gif]

The actual search for the dealer was initially simple, my favorite dealer in RI is Russ's Ocean State HD in Warwick, always has & always will be,  he is a true dealer not a stealer! The deposit was placed on August 6th I place deposit on a 07-FLHTCUSE2 (Black), we decided on black because teh Springer was black, the HD web site did not do the Cherry Red or Lightning Blue justice.

The wait commenced, when I got the Springer I had waited 14 months, this would not be as bad at worst bike might arrive before end of the year. Early October I was told the bike would arrive last week of October.

I called in on Nov 3rd to find bad news, the bike is here, it's black, but there was a major cosmetic defect on the frame paint/powder coating, just under the VIN on the neck a couple inch square area showed exposed metal, which had been clear coated to prevent rusting, They were not going to offer the bike to me in it's current condition, they sent HQ photos & Emails, the area Service Rep had not been to see it or give them an oppinion as to the solution.

A friend of a Friend, wispered into my ear, the only solution is that the bike has to be returned to YORK for frame up rebuild!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hell's Bell's, I am not waiting many more weeks & months to see what comes of this process!

I will be seeking my deposit back if I was succesfull in locating a bike in the New England region, they were agreeable, & appoligetic of the fiasco

On November 9th I took a small 330 mile road trip to four dealers in Mass & NH, most wanted 5000 over MSRP, when I got to stop number four Manchester HD (NH) had an unsold blue model on the floor, this was the first time I had scene this IRL, what a beautifull bike! I contained my self not wanting to show my cards or frustration to the Salesman.

I asked, Is it sold?,,, NOPE

I'll Offer 33,500.

Were seeking 35,500.....

I'll give you a deposit immediately, and a full payment of balance by treasurers check before you close tonight if we reach a mutually agreeble price.

Brief discussion with the Sales Manager/owner.

We will accept 34,500....

Well, that is better, not as good as MSRP, but they are meeting me half way, I have been three dealers that want too much a few more on my trip route may want as much.

SOLD!!!!!

The paperwork to close the sale was complete by the time I got back from the Bank, MSO in my hands by 7:30 that evening!!!! [smiley=banana.gif]

Insured & registered 11/10,
Maiden Voyage 11/11.

Asside from a few niggling issues like the Heated Grips acting up I am one very Happy Camper.

This posting on this forum have been very helpfull in getting me  familiar with all teh bells & whistles of the bike,
Figured out the COMM system, XM activation, Alarm System operation, Garage Door Opener, Tourpack location is in the farback position, looks like I might need one of them offset brackets to give Marie a bit more room.

Todays weather is crappy so I am stuck at 345 miles another 155 then I will drop the oil & filter for it's first change.

At a 1000 miles I'll let the dealer handle that one, I want to make sure the neck bearing fall off is correct, drive belt is correct, they can warrenty the replacement grips.

Again
Thanks for this group & it's enthusiastic members.

Sounds like this was a popular bike in its day. My first bike also was a 1979 XS-1100 Special.

Taxman welcome to CVOHarley. [smiley=xyxthumbs.gif] Similar to your story I went w/o a bike for several years 1988(?) - 1999. Somehow marriage having/raising kids, buying homes, etc. got in the way of motorcycling. I purchased a used Fatboy (1996) in June '99. Then in September

Strange, it looks like several of us rode Yamaha 1100's.

Hey Welcome to the site!

I saw your bike up in Manchester on Nov. 4th!  The blue looked much better in person than in the pics.

We do try to get together occasionally her in the northeast so hope to meet up some day.

A couple of our favorite destinations for lunch are the Cabby shack in Plymouth and Topside in Bristol, RI.
