Bikes with the hydro clutch will need a different pressure plate for the clutch. Everything else is the same. When ordered my Rivera it was a special order.

Guys please update us when you get them install. i have been thinking and looking at the BDL bagger kit for the last 10k miles when my comp first started giving me issues"dealer made the boulder noise go away". Since the noise's are slowly returning in the primary any feedback on these kits would be greatly appreciated. pro/cons.
thanks

on my 77 in about 1983 i had some problems with the clutch basket and some problems with the compensator [and folks think thats new.. ha] so i installed a belt drive...

soooooooooo nice, noisy when the clutch was released, but silent with the clutch engaged. quiet, smooth, better shifting.

what slays me is that going belt drive was about 50% cheaper than fixing the chain primary - now folks get a small fortune for a belt drive! its crazy expensive. most guys then just ran the inner primary bare - or cut it down so it was not as noticeable and made a wire mesh guard for it. the belt drive kit only had the basket and the belt and the pulley, nothing else & i think it cost me 180 or so with tax all in. now they are only available with all this chrome plated billet aluminum unneeded crap to make them look nice. the plain, open, home machined inner primary, hand polished deal was really cool...

can't do that today -

bummer

Timo,

Now that you brought up the Shovelhead, I have a '76 FLH with what I hope is a good compensator now.  I only bought parts I needed.  I replaced the chain and added a M-6 spring adjuster.  I'm getting a bit of whine from primary and I know that the clutch basket, still original and should be replaced.

If I try to keep it original looking, in that I put a vented inspection center cover and a vented derby cover, what is the widest belt I can run?  Can I get a 2" wide in there?

On my board track project I have an Ultima 113" with their Ultima 2" exposed belt drive and from what I hear, thier 2" will handle lots of power.  I know that I can't just use their Ultima kit, but my comments were meant more to say that in my mind a system with today's belt technology should hold up as good as any chain without all the oil leak issues.  Again this is only a stock 74".

So can anyone help me with some advise on belt drive for the ole Shovelhead?

According to my initial contact with PM we will need to run a standard hydraulic clutch side cover (as opposed the CVO one) along with the push rod from a cable six speed trans.

I'll update as I find out more....

:jack: thanks for all the info. Good luck to you guys with your new primaries. I'm sure you'll love them. Just thought I'd throw in a shot of my Exile 3" Open belt.

'Had the Sumax belts f/r on the '81 FXWG, they were smooth and quiet. 'Had to wollow out the inner primary for the rear belt to fit, that allowed some trash to get in the primary, and take out the front (compensator) pulley. If you are running rear chain on your FLH, you shouldn't have the problem that I did.

Harley made the "Sturgis" in (I think '81?) that had belts f/r stock, the MoCo only made the Sturgis for a year or two and went back to a chain primary

the sturgis bike didn't have anything like ventilation for the primary belt and it would bake and go bad.

if you run it with enough ventilation it will be fine enclosed. mine was a 1.5" belt and it was fine - one of mine i took a primary cover that had been damaged in a wreck [all screeched up] and i drilled 1/4" holes 3/8 apart [centers 3/8] all over the cover and put it back on and rode it - very nice.

i still think the current primary belts are stupid expensive. i have papers from my bikes way way back - the current price for the kit i put on my 77 is about 300 dollars....

even now - ALL YOU NEED is the front pulley, the belt, and the clutch basket. all the rest is bling. sometimes i like bling, but two grand of bling on a 300 belt drive - come on!

i suppose the right plan is to find out exactly what the parts are in one of the gold plated kits and get the three needed parts via some other path. that or measure one and make the parts on my buddies hurco

Anybody have any issues running these open primary's in wet weather or having road debris kick up into the belt?? Does the belt aim water up at the rider??  What about longevity?? I don't want to have to worry about anything when leaving for a 2000 mile trip. Any other considerations that I am missing?? Seriously thinking about doing the 2" Primo belt drive to my '11 SESG....

Jim, I was wondering that too.

Just to add a bit to your comments, when I had my '40 Willys coupe with a blown 392 hemi, I ran without a harmonic balancer.  I was told that the belt running on the crank pulley acted as a "shock" to the crank and hence no need for the balancer.  Now I would have used the balancer, but on the old hemis they are usually in pretty poor condition and have to be cut down and reworked.  In my case I just cut off all the old vulcanized rubber and outer ring and had the remaining disc balance with the crank and internals.

So how does the V-Rod get a way without a compensator?  Does it not have all the shake and pulses that the standard 45 V has?

Always enjoy your comments.
Regarding your question on the v rod. Revolution is a short stroke engine that doesn't develop those hard spaced out pulses. No compensator required. There is a cush drive in the rear sprocket and shock absorbing springs in the clutch basket, that's it. Similar to what you would see on an auto clutch plate.  Damn thing is smooth as one can expect from a v twin.
