I agree with the law makers desire to stop lane splitting and require helmets, however having to wear a reflective vest?  That's crazy!

I sure hope next time I'm riding in CA that I don't have to wear a vest.  :nixweiss:

Being a CA resident, lane splitting is necessary here and needs to remain being a legal activity.  In regards to helmets, I do think that they should be mandatory since the taxpayers end up paying for medical care in a lot of cases.  To me, if you don't wear a DOT approved helmet and don't have the $s or insurance to pay for the head trauma, the hospitals should not be required to treat it.  In regards to the vests, I think that it is ridiculous.

Lane splitting is great, would be a mistake to take it away.

I always wear a helmet and I agree, I don't want to pay for the ones that don't. I believe FL have two different insurance levels depending in your choice. Seem to be a good idea since I don't want to pay for non helmeted riders either.

Would like to see the 1% in CA adhering to the vest policy  8)

Let the riders choose to wear a helmet or not.

I am good with as long as I don't have to pay for someone that bounced his head of the street without one.

And we can be certain that you do not want to pay medical bills for those smokers that now have lung cancer, and the overweight people that have medical problems because of their obesity. And on and on and on.

You are correct but that is on its way to be fixed. Most insurance / benefits now charges more for smokers and sometimes in the future I hope the same goes for obese people as well.

Do you want to pay for "them"?

Lane splitting can save your air-cooled engine, especially if the traffic moves just enough to prevent you from shutting off the engine.  Most non-bikers see it as someone getting ahead of them in traffic--the reality, of course, is that a few bikers passing by won't have any noticeable effect on them.

If cagers can't see the lights, reflectors, and flashers on the bike, or the bike itself, they sure aren't going to see a vest.  Most of these laws are an attempt to make riding such a hassle that it discourages newbies and the less-dedicated.

Governments want obedient and docile sheep-subjects, not independent and self-reliant citizens.  We need to get government out of our lives, except for the functions listed in the Constitution, instead of making more and more laws that control our every action.

Off the  :soapbox: now.

US DOT had a study done that supported lane splitting for scooters as being safer than sitting in stop and go traffic.  But you can bet that it wont carry a lot of weight in the legislature.  That bunch will be more concerned by the complaints from their pissed off cage driving voters.

As to the vests, that sounds like a "see you in court" kind of law.  No direct contribution to rider safety not already provided by lighting.  Prolly introduced by some ex-military management types who felt that it was good for their bases and would be good for the world too.  Just like saluting authority and cutting hair.  That stuff generally has a hard time out here in the world.   If it is about covering the cuts, I would think that they would just roll the MC's into the anti gang regs.

Repealing helmet laws is going to be a tough sell.  With Osamma care about to upset the whole public health care foundation, things that appear to add costs will die quick deaths in state legislatures.

Not sure I understand your question, am I okay with everyone having a choice.

I don't want to pay for the ones to chose not to protect themselves.

But it's properly best for all of us to not bounce our head on the street  :2vrolijk_21:
