My Story and desired outcome.
« on: January 14, 2014, 10:15:49 PM »

GRC says I am going about things incorrectly and I should give y'all all the information up front and you can make better recommendations, so here it is. I have a 2009 CVO Springer, bought it this summer. I came with an 3" Exile Open Belt Primary, but I received the stock one as well. It is stock other than that and I just moved the coil and I have bought a V&H Pro Pipe. My buddy essentially gave me a new TW-7H and directional lifters which I planned to install and have the heads milled so they would reach peak performance. I also got the original SEPST with the sale. I have only one tuner within 200+ miles and he doesn't do it full-time, the dealership has him run their dyno during riding seasons. I am not a hotrodder or a big wrist twister but I like to know if needed the power is there. I do spend sometimes making a 350 mile commute on weekends. My buddies and I will wind it up on occasion but too often. Speeding tickets are ridiculous up here! I want a cam with good power and that's easy to access and if it comes on early that would be great. I don't want to have to jack my compression too high. I think those are all the things GRC wanted.laid out. Hope that's gives enough info. Hope you're not too tired after reading this essay!

the 7H is a nice cam set,but youll need 10.5-1 to get it work.get some 22502-07A 4.0" 10.5-1 pistons or bore your cylinders & go 113" with some 22571-07B 4.060" pistons :2vrolijk_21:

So you would advise changing the pistons as opposed to milling the heads to raise the compression? Thanks

yes, getting the 110 heads to around 10.5-1 takes more milling than I like doing

In some cases, both are needed to establish the target compression.

since you HAVE a sepst for the bike - its a LOT of bux to change it out. also if you do change it out - other tuners will do something akin to tuning a tune unless its flashed to as close to stock as you can get.  if you had no tuner at all, or the dongle was missing then advise would be very different, but if you have the dongle and its married to the bike its a perfectly competent way to get a good tune.. distance is not that big a deal since you only need to take it to the tuner if and when you change something. you can probably call your tuner of choice and get a map from them that will be perfectly suitable to use to ride the bike in to get tuned.

Thanks, there seems be so many variables to increasing compression. If I go with pistons, I could possibly end up with too much compression based on the inconsistent chamber size, correct? Now, I have no challenge with selling my 7H, if I decided not to up the compression, what cam would you to suggest at stock compression which may be easier than removing the heads?

you don't have to worry about too much compression with just pistons.whats scott is saying,is that for higher than 10.5-1,milling will be needed along with the dome pistons.if you go with the 10.5-1 SE 4" pistons, youll be fine for the 7H cams

I believe I understand what you guys are saying, but everyone says that the chamber size varies a lot in the 110 heads, so if a my set of heads had smaller than normal chamber size and I added the 10.5 pistons, wouldn't my compression be too high?

they would have to be cc`ed,but ive not seen big variances in sets of 110 heads (maybe 1 cc,but no more than that)

Twism,

Harley makes a kit just for this purpose, I went that route. Look it up and it will give you an idea. You already have most of the parts. To stay safe 10.5-1 is not a big change in compression but you will gain a lot from it and you won't need to go all radical with your engine "MONEY".

My focus was to have more mid range for the bike, so I decided to run 259 cams. But I noticed, that I would lose a good drop on low end. I bumped the compression up a little 10.5-1 and I gained back low end with and little more, my mid-range jumped to the right.

My next focus was to try to make a light build and get longevity for my bike without going into the motor all the time. I'll shoot you a article about compression I think you will find interesting. I'm not a big v-twin guy but I built my fair share dirt track and motocross motors.

There are a lot of guy's here that played with different combinations and they can steer you in the right direction. My first three weeks on the forum I spent tons of time in the archives searching different information as well.  Please see your messages.
