Help with trailer-project needed
« on: January 15, 2014, 01:43:36 PM »

Hi trailer-users,

here in Switzerland you need the written okay from HD-Switzerland, if
you would like to use a trailer, e.g. the uni-go. Now I got the feedback,
that the Moco never ever mentioned to use one of their bikes together
with a trailer. It doesn't matter which brand of trailer or hitch I would use,
E-Glide or Sportster, they strictly don't allow to use of a bike together
with a trailer.

Can anyone provide me with a proof, that this statement is wrong?
Because I can't believe that you all drive around, not knowing that
every policeman can stop you for using a trailer.

Translation of the letter:

Thank you for your inquiry regarding the operation of a trailer by means of a
hitch by Kuryakin at your FLTRSE3 built in 2009. Unfortunately we absolutely not
certify the operation of a HD-bikes with any trailer of any brand, because the
manufacturer, in this case the HD Moco Inc., has strictly forbidden such operation
in connection with their products. If you therefore will still want to operate a trailer
on your bike, you will need to do this on your own, without responsibility and
without certification of the vehicle manufacturer, the HD Moco Inc..

We regret it ......blalalalalal

But without this certificate, we don't get any license here in Switzerland.

Don't believe it's model specific... MoCo does not promote/certify/condone trailer use w/any of their motorcycles.... matter fact some warranty claims have been denied on motorcycles that have had hitches (for trailers) on them.

You will NEVER get a letter of approval from HD, more due to the fear of legal issues (wrecks, etc) than actual harm to the bike. They hunt excuses to void a warranty....this one works every time for them.

I don't need their warranty, because here in Switzerland we have the
producer-warranty, so it would be for e.g uni-go for the trailer and
Kuryakin for the hitch.

The crazy thing is, that I could let test it all together, which would be
around 9k for the hitch, would pay for the trailer and had to provide
the bike as well. The Dynamic test center

run such test here. If you get their approval, then you get your
license-plate in the county you live in. It looks like I have to ground
this project. Would cost me a fortune.

Bruno, if I'm understanding correctly it sounds like you don't have governmental authority unless the manufacturer says it is ok.  That the two are linked.  So unless Harley says they approve use with a trailer you licensing authority will not approve.  Here the two things are separate.

Harley does not support nor in any way "approve" or accept use of bikes with a trailer.  Here that is a separate thing from being licensed for use on the road though.  The various states and the Federal government all have their own rules for what's allowed on the roads.  Those governmental rules don't have to follow any advice from any particular manufacturer.  So while Harley itself might say "no trailers" and choose to deny warranty because of it that in no way makes it illegal to have such a pair on the street.
