Cheap way to stand bike upright while changing fluids?
« on: January 17, 2014, 11:18:04 AM »

I usually use my wife to hold the bikes upright while changing say the transmission fluid, but was wondering if there was a relatively cheap alternative to this so I could just work on them when I want to without bugging her to help.  I could go with a jack, but I have heard a good jack runs quite a bit of money (J&S or Pitbull for example).  There doesn't appear to be a center stand made for my bikes (Breakouts and Sportster 72), and I don't know if I would want to add one anyway.  Any ideas would be great.

If you have a shop, you could put a couple of anchor bolts or something in the slab to tiee off to. Then tie it down like you would in the back of a truck or on a trailer with some ratchet straps.

Check ads for a used wheel chock like the ones used to secure the front wheel in a trailer or on a lift table.  Bolt it to the garage floor, roll the front wheel into it and lock it in place.  WheelDock is one brand.    http://www.wheeldock.com/store/item/wheeldock

I had thought about this, but didn't want to put any holes in the garage floor if possible.

Go to that link I posted and you'll see that they say you can use it as a freestanding chock or you can bolt it to a trailer floor (or garage floor).  Click on the link on their site for the owners manual and read through it.  If I were planning to use it freestanding, I'd permanently attach some rubber pads to the "feet" to make sure it wouldn't slide around.

Thanks-will check it out-Checked it out and looks like this is the way to go, and I will attach some rubber to the feet.  Thanks again.

Use mine (Wheeldock) in the garage.  It is not bolted down and does not move when riding into it or backing out.  Works great.

On the touring bikes I put a 2X4 under the jiffy stand and works well when changing fluids-may or maynot work for you.

....2x4 and a piece of 3/4 plywood with a strap to the wall on the 'low' side...should be pretty close to upright.

The Harbor Freight black wheel chock would work well for this.  Its made very cheap but with the front cross brace it will hold bike upright.  Keep an eye on their ads and can frequently catch it for under $50 with 20% discount coupon.  I'm not suggesting it is anywhere near as good as the wheeldock but for this use its fine.

If you have them both helping at the same time (and getting along) they shouldn't drop it (neither would want to be on your bad side).... and then think of all the fun you could have afterwards...

I'll keep this in mind, and in the mean time I think I will go with a wheel dock.
