Changing Bars with ABS Brakes
« on: January 17, 2014, 08:00:34 PM »

For anybody that has changed their own bars on an ABS bike. How did you handle bleeding the ABS system?

I only replaced the line from the bars to the abs controller.  I filled the new line with brake fluid before I attached it to the controller to reduce the amount of air that I would need to bleed.  After attaching, I filled the resivore and let it sit all night to enable all the natural bleeding that I could get.  The next day, I took a syringe and plastic tube and sucked any air out that was left from the bleeder valve.  Really there wasn't much air that I bleed out.  Remember not to let your resivore go dry or you'll need to start all over again.

I was able to do the job without opening the brake system. I wish I could have been some help in answering your question. But, CowboyBagger has some good stuff there. Best of luck.

I did this same upgrade, did 10" Yaffe. I went to the local NAPA and bought 2 feet of 1/4" clear plastic flexible hose. I pushed one end of the line over the bleeder and it fits tight and is sealed very well so there is no leak. I removed the reservoir covers and filled them. I opened the bleeder and placed the other end of the hose in a glass jar. I allowed the fluid to run untill I could see no air bubbles coming out of the bleeder, adding fluid to the reservoir to keep it full while is was "gravity" bleeding. When no air was present I closed the bleeder, topped off the reservoir and capped it. I pumped the brake lever and held it and opened the bleeder. No air came out of the bleeder with the hose on. I repeated on the other caliper and then on the clutch. The clutch feels good and works perfect as do the brakes. Simple and cost me like 3 bucks for the hose!! This was last winter and rode all last summer no issues.

I swapped the upper and lower line when I did the bars on my FLHTK.  Bled it by hand, then gravity bled it a few days later.  The lever still didn't feel right.  Took it to the dealer to do on the DT.  They charged me $40 to hook it up and finish the bleed, lever felt fantastic after that.

YMMV.

I have had good luck using this to change the brake fluid about every five years or so. First you suck out all the fluid you can out of the reservoir and then fill  up the syringe with fresh fluid and force the new fluid through the bleeder until you see clean fluid coming into the reservoir. It forces any air bubbles up through the system instead of trying to force them down in the opposite direction they want to go.http://www.ebay.com/itm/EZ-BLEEDER-BRAKE-AND-CLUTCH-BLEEDER-GREAT-FOR-REVERSE-BLEEDING-/201021171113?pt=Motorcycles_Parts_Accessories&hash=item2ecdcba5a9&vxp=mtr

I like that idea.  Makes sense.

I didn't need to open the brake line to put on Wild Ones 12.5 inch apes, but i did need to separate the clutch line at the master cylinder to re-route the line.  This works great for bleeding the lines, and is cheaper than others:  http://www.ebay.com/itm/9-ounce-Brake-And-Clutch-Bleeder-Hydraulic-Hand-Pump-Kit/201024947796
