Idiotic thing I did today
« on: January 20, 2014, 10:09:39 AM »

So i am not sure what to do here, so i am soliciting ideas....

I was cleaning my bike and enjoying the holiday, i decicded it would be a good idea to get the old dried up wax out from around the fuel filler neck; and there i was holding half a tooth pick.  The other piece went right in the tank.  I tried moving the bike around to get the piece to float by so i could grab it.  After an hour of this non-sense i lost my mind and gave up.  So any pne got a suggestion to get it out or is it even important to get it out???

Have no idea what the piece that fell in was made out of.  Have seen some plastics or resins that break down in gasoline over time though.  Aside from the potential of the solid piece potentially hanging up the float, and thereby fouling up the fuel reading, I'd want to get it out just so the thought of some soft potentially gummy piece of gunk breaking down and slowly polluting the fuel system didn't drive me to distraction.

I think that an hour with my nose over the fuel tank would make me lose my mind as well!

I would want to get it out though, best bet would be to remove the tank and drain it.

YES removing the tank takes a little time but not a hard thing to do, that would be the right move.

Maybe you could try riding to lower the amount of gas or going to the station and adding some gas till the level of fuel was just barely below the filler tube.  Then it would maybe be possible to jiggle the bike around until the damn pick piece floated into view and you could snatch it out. :nixweiss:

Drain the gas and that's exactly what I'd do.

Drain the gas, remove tank from bike, and that's exactly what I'd do.

If it was wood, I wouldn't spend a great deal of time on it, unless it is raining. I it was some sort of plastic.....get it out, NOW!!

Get a simple syphon and syphon out as much gas as possible.  You may get lucky and suck out the toothpick, in which case you're done.  If not, having most of the gas out of the tank makes removing and handling the tank much easier and therefore much less likely to result in dropsies and damage.

If it's a simple wood toothpick, it may never cause a problem.  On the other hand, with my luck it would cause a failure when I was as far from civilization as possible.  I'd have to get it out or it would haunt me until I did.

This is what i have tried, the tank is pretty full.  The toothpick is a wooden one by the way.

So the problem is the filler neck is below the large opening so i am not so sure turning it upside down will help much.  Is the a bigger opening under the console?

Have you tried a fish net (ones for home fish aquarium's)? Maybe you can find one that is small enough to fit through the opening and scoop it out. :nixweiss:

If that's the worst thing you ever do to your bike count your blessings, if your a real worry wart go ahead and disassemble everything, but no matter how careful you are you run the risk of doing some real damage, personally I wouldn't give it a second thought.

Also if your tank is like the '07 one pictured below there should be a panel on top of the tank you can remove to gain better access. This panel is removed to remove/change the fuel filter/pump.

If you don't already it get a parts manual for your bike or have someone supply you a copy of that page as I believe there will be gasket(s) that might need replacing if you go this route.

The MOCO sells what you need in kit form - the gasket and the fasteners.  The fasteners are not to be reused...
