Heated Handlegrip Problems?
« on: November 17, 2006, 11:12:35 PM »

My heated handle grips don't heat anywhere near as well as they did when they were new 1 year ago. Is this a common problem? Do they "burn out"? How long do they last? How about a poll? Question could be "Have you had a problem with your heated handle grips? --- Yes/No/Don't have 'em

The dealer has a new set on order for me right now! My problems have been a little different though. First, about 1 month new, they stopped working (dealer fixed connection?), then they would come on in ACC ignition switch position, but with knob turned off. Made it hard if you listen to the stereo while cleaning. Then the stopped completely again while we were in Reno, found that if I rocked the acc. rocker switch they worked again and have since. Newest problem, on the way home from the So. Cal. Bikefest they come on (switches all off) and I had to ride all the way like that, lucky I had my big gloves on board. That was October, and not one problem since? The dealer still wants to replace them.   Wrongway

Had mine replaced when I got back from MV. They only worked on 6.  They used to heat pretty good o 3 or 4.

Wait till Candy finds this thread ... ohh boy its gonna be a field day :)

Actually its been refreshing to see mine work.   I had heard lots of people say they had problems with them, so my fingers are crossed that HD finally has gotten them right.

Mrs WeCVO

Been thinking a long time about those grips(gripes) of yours.  It makes no sense to me that you have had 5 sets and others (like mine) work perfectly.  There has to be a problem with the installation.  I am no electramagician, but it seems after so many tries they are missing something.  They could change out 20 and if they don't find the error they will all go bad.

The best engineered stuff can be worthless if improperly installed... [smiley=oops.gif]

There is a MoCo Service Bulletin on this.

I found a website that had it posted.

I guess I'll find out how mine fairs as I'm installing a set this weekend.Definitely am going to "keep the receipts"

There is! [smiley=xyxthumbs.gif] It's called Zippers.
Oh, back to the subject, I had one set of heated grips and they never made it out of the dealer. I bought them, then dropped by the service dept. where they told me to take them back and buy some heated gloves. The tech told they had hell with the grips and sevice manager told them not to keep it a secret. [smiley=thumbsdown.gif]
So back to the parts counter I went and had them credit the sale. Then went home and ordered the Gerbing G3 gloves, one of my seldom smart moves. ;D

My bike is really new but when I went out last weekend and the weather was cold they were sure nice.  Had them set on 5 to feel the heat.  the seat sure gets hot though, geee's  ;D that's kind of nice on a cold foggy day as it was.

Mine are 9 months and 13K miles old and have worked perfectly, although they really don't get that hot compared to a goldwing or other brand. After a long ride on a cold day, I sometimes think they are maybe not working, but when stopped and without a glove on, you can definatly feel the heat, so maybe it's just the gloves are too thick to really feel the heat. Seat works fine also. Very seldon have to use high setting.

I bought a set, threw the instructions in the trash. Wired them internally. Ran the power through an additional accessory switch, leave them on 6, and turn them on and off through the acc switch. 2 years and counting w/o problems.
