last year on my annual 3 week outing with the gang, we rode from FLA to Reno over a number of roads. On Hwy 50 going across Nevada, about 120 miles from Reno (About 2 miles from Cold Spring Station) i experienced a flat tire on the rear of my 12 Skunk around 530pm. Tire when down quickly and was able to get to the side of the hwy without incident. Called HOG. They kept me on the phone while they contacted the nearest tow truck to come and pick me up, nearest truck in O Fallon (60 to 70 miles away). Long story, tow truck wanted $750, cash before he would put bike in SLING. No trailer, No flat bed. He wanted to SLING my bike up off the ground on a boom attached to the back of the truck and take me into O Fallon for a tire.
I told him hell no, called HOG back and said is this all you got??? They informed me that they had NO contracted tow trucks in the area and the operator was all they had. One of my group went down about 2 miles to Cold Spring Station and talked with the owner. Who immediately sent his handy man down with a pickup truck and flat bed trailer to haul my bike up to the station and get me off the road.
Since i always have at least two tie downs with me(long story), we tied the front end down as tight as possible to the trailer. I rented a room for the night for around $80 bucks and stayed in the little 4 room motel. two of my group stayed with me. Next morning bright and early, handy man shows up and we head out going to O Fallon for tire. Get to O Fallon, no tire (those 18 X 180) tires are not the norm. So on to Reno. 3 hours after we start, pull up at the Reno Harley Dealer. Unload bike with their super fancy ramp. I asked the guy what i owned him. He said, pay for my fuel and whatever you think is fair. WTF, OK, so i do some quick math, $75 for Fuel and $150 for your time. How's that? his answer, more than i was expecting......I thanked him and he left. So not counting the cost of the tire and installation, i went from $750 for the tow to $225 plus $80 or $305. HOG of course picked up $100. Which is their max. Total out of pocket.....$205.
Today, i have Road America, the mid Tier package. I think i paid @29.95 for a year. It covers complete cost of Tow, lodging, etc. as i never want to have to go through that hassle ever again. AAA was not a bargain to add motorcycle, and anything else just did not compare to Road America.
My thoughts and recommendation.
