Compensator Nut on '06's
« on: November 19, 2006, 07:26:04 PM »

I know there have been problems with the Comp nut coming loose on some of the 04's and 05's, but I've only heard of one coming loose on an '06, and none so far on the '07's.  As some of you know, I had a problem in MV with my bike after the HD dealer did the 5K service...they had tried to adjust my auto chain tensioner and screwed it up in the process.  It was making a rattling/scraping noise on the primary side, then it quit on the way home.  I pulled the primary, took the adjuster out and re-installed...no more problems, and I've put over 1K miles on it since.  Weelllllllll...after installing the RH's and getting the dyno tune yesterday...guess what?  Went for a ride this afternoon, and on the way back felt a clunk under my left foot (Diva felt it too), then at idle, there was a distinct metal to metal sound coming from the front primary side of the motor.  Did not hear it yesterday on the way back home from the tuner...thought I heard something when I cranked it this morning, but then nothing.  After feeling the clunk under my foot when gently rolling on/off the throttle on the way home this afternoon, pulled into the driveway, and there was a distinct rattle in the left primary, but only at idle or when shutting down or starting...at RPM above idle, no noise.  This noise is NOTHING like the noise in MV and does not sound like it's coming from exactly the same place.  The rattle in this case is more of a noise like a metal to metal thing, but not AGAINST the primary, like when the adjuster was out of whack.  Having seen the Comp nut and sprocket, and where it's located, the noise is definitely coming from there.

I checked the comp nut when I was in there before, but of course, did not have a socket large enough to put a torque wrench on it, so didn't get to check the torque.  Is it possible that doing the dyno run stressed things enough to make a problem that was going to happen anyway show up?

Took the bike to the dealer, dropped it off.  The service writer seemed to agree with my diagnosis....comp nut.  Left it for them to get to tomorrow...I hope.

Comments?  Anyone else had this problem?

Terry,

A heavy load situation like that could make it show up sooner especially since your winding the motor up to its limiter over and over.  If it were coming loose or already loose this would definately help to speed up the effects.   Hopefully it just needs to be retightened and some locktite applied.   If it were my bike I would definately request that they do a thorough check to be sure none of the threads have been damaged and that they make sure there is plenty of locktite down there this time if the comp nut is indeed the problem.

Terry,
Our 06 had it's compensator come loose on the way to MV.  The noise it makes definitely comes and goes.  It also seems to be worse at idle/starting.

I don't have a lot of confidence in them, as you can tell.

Terry,
What dealer would that be?  Is it the same one doing my paint?  Also, who did your dynamometer tune?  I'm looking for someone trustworthy, who may be closer to me than Boswell's in Nashville.

Guys,

I am attaching two HD sevice notices on Compensator Nut problems from 03, they are still having some of these problems. Take these to your dealer and tell them to follow these procedures, if they are not already doing so.

Just to add info to the c-nut issue.  Ours came loose with about 3500 miles on the bike, bone stock with no dyno runs, mostly highway running.  The dyno may not have had anything to do with it.  Ours was loose enough the tech took it off with his fingers.  Somehow it didn't tear anything else up.  The bike is definitely quieter, especially on start up.

Thanks for that update, John.

Good news!!!! [smiley=banana.gif] [smiley=jalapeno.gif]  Mine was the comp nut...just called the dealer and they have torqued it down with some red loctite this time, got it back together and it's in the wash bay.  No damage done, as I caught it quickly. Guess I'll freeze picking it up this evening...the high today is 46, so when dark falls it will be in the 30's with 15 to 25 NW winds....brrrrrrrrrrrr.  Don't have to ride it but about 6 miles though.  I will have to give Heart of Dixie credit for putting me at the head of the line and getting this taken care of.  I swear, I think they give the SE bike owners preferential treatment....sssshhhhhhh, don't tell anyone though. ;)

One other comment...when I had the cover off to fix the auto primary adjuster they had screwed up, I did put a big a$$ed box end wrench I have on the comp nut to be sure it was not loose...it was not loose at that time, one month ago.  I could not check the torque on it, but I could not move it with a box end that is a good 18" long, at least.  After all of these problems with the Comp nut on bikes prior to the 06, HD supposedly changed the way the nut was torqued...maybe somebody didn't read that part of the assembly manual.  Learn your bikes normal sounds so you'll recognize those that are abnormal!!

All's well that ends well...just glad it happened when it did and not in BFE South Alabama/Northern Florida on our way down this Wed.   [smiley=nervous.gif] [smiley=xyxthumbs.gif]

Bob and Gary...thanks!  My butt was pinching washers yesterday evening on the way to the dealer worrying about whether any damage was done, and whether it was going to be fixed in time.  I'd hate to have to hang Diva on the back of the Duc for 600 miles... :o :o ;D ;) Of course, we'd have made it there quickly.... ;D ;D I think we'd be traveling in the Subaru instead.... :'( :'(
