Advice for pulling wires.
« on: February 02, 2014, 10:25:29 PM »

I'm in the process of installing 16 in Cyclesmiths on my 2010 SEUC, I'm ready to pull the wires and am wondering what's the best way to get the wires through the bars. On the throttle side should I pull all of the wires together or pull the throttle and heated grips through then the rest of the wires or pull everything at one time? Same question for the other side. Does anybody have a preference when it comes to the lubricant to use while pulling the wires?
Thanks

Windex works great as a lube.

Buy a bottle of wire lube ( electrical aisle ) Home Depot. I bought a bottle ( less than $10.00 ), it's a clear slippery gel that won't harm your bike, and cleans up easily. Really works well.

I agree with the wire lube.  The first time I put on bars, I wrapped the wires in black electrical tape, used windex as a lube and the windex started dissolving the electrical tape.  I ended up with a black sticky mess, which the wife about killed me for trying this at the kitchen table!

Wire Lube and pull them all through at one time.  It's more of a push and pull, push and pull until your done.

Used 1/2" shrink wrap on the switch housing wires and pulled the tbw wires through at the same time. Sprayed the inside of the bars with liquid wrench dry lubricant spay (worked great, no mess).

I've used baby powder and it works great. Coat the wires, dump some in the bars, and pull it through.

Pull the TBW and switch housing wires TOGETHER. Lots of lube, lots of patience. Push a little in as you pull out the other end.

I am considering using lithium grease as a lube, any down falls or possible issues using grease?

I prefer baby powder.  While wire lube works, it also retains dirt and grit...  JMO...

Is this a two person job or a job one person can handle?

industrial wire lube dissipates.  Doesn't retain anything.  I've used it on two installs.

If you say so...  It wasn't my experience.

I tried a 3M industrial wire pulling lubricant, wax based, a few years ago.  It worked well, but I subsequently found it had retained dirt and grit.  But maybe there's another brand or type of wire lubricant that works better than my experience...   :nixweiss:

i wouldn't.  i used lithium grease on my garage door mechanism.  stuff lasts forever, and gets everywhere.....

plus, i think the wire lube is cheaper.

Use a chain to pull wires. Like a dog leash type chain. Buy a cheap dog leash and cut the ends off it and run that through, connect the wires, lube up the wires as stated above and use the push pull method to get them through. This worked for me!!
