I work in IT.  Networks, switches, Visualization are the journey men trades of the IT industry, and you competing with kids fresh out of school with lots of Certifications.  This tech is always changing, and you need to keep up to date or your a specialist on the AS400 and nobody has any.

Go into something more whitecollar.  Read up on Business Intelligence and Data Mining.  That's where the money is, and that's where companies and the GOVT need help.  That is what the NSA has been doing, not networks and switches. Companies are looking at massive inputs of data on people, where they shot what they like, what are thier buying trends.  The Military uses BI to look at incident reports and notice trends (for instance, in Afghanistan, you are more likely to be hit with a IED in a Toyota than a Chev truck) which are passed back to the guys on the ground for situational awareness.

Govt and Industry will always need information.  Who needs a VAX or a MicroVax guy these days?  Or tolken Ring.

Cheers
