TTS HELP- Bike went to shop now can't install program
« on: February 19, 2014, 08:36:24 PM »

I have a '10 Ultra and it was recently in the shop due to a short.  While in the shop they replaced the entire security module and some other things.  I received the bike back today and wanted to be sure my TTS was still installed.  While it was installing my program the following message came up: "The interface has been locked different vehicle(s) and cannot be used for programming".
When I look at the ECM Info. in the Lock Stat notes: "1 Slot, Vehicle Not Matched".   Please HELP!!

Look at the bill or talk to them.  Here's the question that needs to be asked.  Did they swap out the ECM while doing the other stuff?  I bet that they did.

If this IS the case...  tell them you want the old ECM back!  Dumbasses... they think if their Digital TEch cannot immediately talk to the ECU, that it must be bad.  That is NOT the case... all they have to do is a few more clicks.

Called TTS today and they told me send in the old ECM, new ECM and interface from my TTS System and they will transfer my Mastertune to the new ECM.
The only charge will be whatever it costs to return the units via FEDEX Ground.
It would have been nice for the dealer to tell me this otherwise I would have just run it with the new ECM figuring it was already tuned.  Good thing I checked.

Was there anything wrong with the old ecm to begin with? Not just a misdiagnosis on the shops part is it?

My thought exactly.  When a shop changes out three parts (ECM, TSSM, and heated grips) to fix a short circuit problem, that sounds a bit like a part changer's approach versus a real technicians approach.  I wonder who paid the bill for this "repair"?  If it was the customer I think I'd be looking for some proof the ECM was actually bad before I paid the bill.  If the ECM is in fact not defective I'd give them the new one back, reinstall the old one, and not have to bother sending them to TTS at all.

Jerry: Out of curiosity, if your ECM is bad and you have to replace it, are you SOL on using your existing TTS module?

Not Jerry, but if your ECM goes bad with or with out a Mastertune installed, any HD dealership can replace it. If this happens we offer a service that the customer calls and gets an RMA from us and sends us the Old ECM, New ECM and Mastertune unit. We will take the Mastertune and transfer the unit to the new ECM and return them to you. Customer cost on this is just cover the shipping , we charge nothing other than that. Now the old ECM and the new ECM must be for the same bike or we will not do it and believe me some have tried!

Steve,

Hasn't happened to me, but here's a hypothetical.  If an ECM is replaced under warranty, my understanding is the old one has to be sent back to Mother Harley.  If this happens before the unwitting (probably me) owner finds out, he no longer has access to the old ECM.  Is there any recourse under these circumstances?  I am aware of the option of having the dongle unlocked for a 2nd bike, but was wondering what else could be done.

The problem for us is 1/2 the locking is in the old ECM and the other 1/2 is in the interface. So it's like having a key but no lock to go with it. One without th eother is pretty much useless at that point. So the only thing left is to upgrade the interface to a new dual setup which you already know about.

Trying to learn here so bear with me. If you have a TTS map such as Steve's installed and the ecm would need replaced for any reason everything has to go back together so the program can be pulled and installed in the new ecm, correct? If so, what are the chances of a dealer letting you have the old ecm long enough to do this if the part was covered under warranty. In the car business, all old parts replaced under warranty are subject to being recalled by GM at any time for 30 days or a charge back is initiated on the dealer for the missing part. I can see a dealer not wanting to allow you to send back the old ecm to avoid this. Anyone have any experience with this happening?  Thanks for any input.

While anything is possible, the standard HD warranty is only 2 years. Very few ECM's fail at all. Most dealers will work with you if you treat them nicely. We have had a few come in for this but in the big picture the 10 or so we have done over the last 13 years of doing this almost all, were out of warranty to begin with. I think 1 or 2 were warranty and the dealers were fine with the exchange. For the record the dealers thought it was pretty nice that we would transfer the license as they told me that HD just tells them tough luck, sell the customer another tuner again. Not sure what the other company's do but the issue is there with any tuner that flashes the factory ECM.

Thanks Steve, that is the info I was looking for. Glad to hear it is not a big concern directly from the manufacturer! Ten in thirteen years is pretty good odds.

Just a thought but wouldn't it be a good idea to inform the dealership that you have a tuner installed before they start working on the bike? Seems the logical thing to do is put the ECM back to stock before bringing the bike to the shop and avoid any problems. If the ECM is replaced you merely have to reload the tune when you get it back correct?

Won't work, if I understand what you are asking.  Once it's locked to an ECM, it's locked.  Putting the ECM back to stock does not unlock it.
