Seat Strap mods?
« on: March 01, 2014, 12:15:26 PM »

I have a 07 Electraglide.
I would love to be able to remove the seat without having to unbolt the the saddlebag mount!
Does anyone know of a mod available to make the seat strap quick release?
Or should I make my own QR rig?

I bet something could be home made but I doubt you will find a commercial solution since from what I have been told that strap is supposed to be a safety strap to allow the passenger to grab hold of and not be thrown off......Having it quick detach would defeat it's intended use.
I was told once at my dealer that they couldn't officially remove the "safety strap" but if my bike came in for service and it was missing nothing would be said.

Just remove the strap. :nixweiss: I don't know many/any passengers that are inclined to use them in the first place most would prefer a backrest if the concern is coming off the back.

I have always taken them off of every Harley I have ever owned. To me they have never been very useful, and are more of a nuisance than beneficial.

I can't remember ever seeing anyone actually use those straps, and considering how little room there is on the typical Harley seat it would be tricky at best to actually get a good grip on it anyway.  Just remove it like most of us do.

A much better solution was the one my old Honda had, with grab rails mounted to the frame on each side for a passenger to grip.  I'm not sure if anyone makes something like that to bolt on a Harley or not.

The straps main use is for holding the seat down, without it the only thing holding down is a 1/4" thumb screw....

I agree as a grabstrap is just silly. :bananarock:

The seat is held down by a tongue and bracket arrangement up front and the hold down screw in the back, if you're talking about the regular one piece seat on a Harley touring model.  You don't need the strap to hold the seat down, and that's not the real purpose of it.  It is strictly there to meet safety regulations that state there must be a passenger hand hold (other than the rider).

Used to have a really nice set of chrome grips that bolted to the rear fender under the seat on electraglides.

I just open the left side saddlebag and take this screw out:

The result of that is the strap is now free and you can remove the seat and do whatever you need, much simpler than removing the saddlebag, unbolting the front saddlebag mount ..... and then realigning everything when you put it all back together

I have the Harley grab rails for the passenger, but since they are just a little too narrow for the width of the seat, I have to use the strap to help hold the seat down.  If that screw in back comes out, my seat pops up an inch or two from the fender.  Like Phato1 said, I just open the left saddlebag lid and I have ready access to the screw holding the strap on.  I can't see removing that screw adding more than 30 seconds to removing the seat.

I guess I am one of the few who actually keep the strap on.

It comes in handy as a place to grab when uprighting a downed bike. Butt in the saddle, one hand on the lower handlebar grip, one on the strap, step back and walk the bike upright.  I also run a power plug through it so the passenger has a place to plug heated gear in.

Different model years apparently have different mounting systems.
On the 2007 it is not possible to remove the strap without removing the saddlebag mount.
Gonna try removing ther strap entirely, have heard of many claim the seat will occasionally work its way loose without the strap, which I can see happening, My seat mount screw often loosens.

I'm pretty sure the same process worked on my '06 non-CVO Ultra  :nixweiss:
