Start in gear
« on: March 12, 2014, 07:47:35 PM »

A couple of months ago I added XM radio to my 09 CVO road glide, love it.
Now I can't start motorcycle when in gear with clutch disengaged, it did before.
Useful when parking old towns in the Sierra Foothills.
Ridin to Reno, Virginia City and Lea Vining, would be useful to have.
Any Ideas as to what changed?

Thanks for any help.

Did you try to tune your XM to a heavy metal radio station ?   ;)

Probably electrical problem, computer not receiving the signal that the clutch is disengaged...  Cabling ?  Switch ?

There is a little black rubber boot or plunger that should be engaging or disengaging when you pull your clutch lever in....This lets the bike start in gear...pull the clutch lever in a little and you should see a little black boot....If the lever is not making contact with the boot it will not start in gear...hope this helps

If you are familiar with how the front brake switch is set up and how it works, the clutch interlock switch is basically the same thing on the other side.  The switch is actually mounted in the left switch housing with a plunger sticking out (just like the brake switch on the right side).  The first thing to check is to make sure the plunger is actually moving in and out when you engage and release the clutch lever.  The switch could be loose inside the housing and the plunger not making full travel for instance.  If the switch appears to be tight and working properly mechanically, then you will need to check the electrical function.  It's just a simple on/off switch that should show continuity one way and an open circuit the other (I forget if it's normally open or normally closed).

btw, one other possibility to think about, since you were in the fairing for the XM install, is that the wiring for the switch got damaged or disconnected.  Check the switch continuity where the harness in the bars connects to the main or interconnect harness, not just at the switch itself.  I don't have a wiring diagram for your bike, but if you need to trace circuits you will want to get your hands on one.

Hey thanks for the info on that clutch side switch. Been riding old bikes too long without all these features.

I'm having the same issue, would you please point out the little black rubber boot or plunger for me, see I went to public schools and don't know alot.
Here is the HD instructions, would you please give me the part number so I can zero in on it in the diagram?

Click on the attachment to enlarge.  The switch isn't shown in the instruction sheet you posted, it's actually mounted in the switch housing with the turn signal/horn/hi beam switches.

Starting in gear is a good way to chip a tooth off the clutch basket.

I can bypass the switch, but it's there for a reason, so I'll just leave it alone and go by the rules.

I had one do this once and the switch housing had slipped outward and the lever would miss the switch when pulled in.
