Twitchy throttle 2013 cvo road king
« on: March 16, 2014, 07:09:19 PM »

If I am in 1st or 2nd gear and hit a bump my wrist moves and the throttle reacts. Is there an adjustment that slows the throttle's reaction? Kind of a buffer.
Is there a better riding position? I have tried to relax my grip but it doesn't really help.

Throttle by wire sucks just for that reason.

Maybe Mr. cole from Fullsac can comment if a TTS tuner can help with that?

The way the throttle feels can be adjusted in Mastertune. It's something that various people feel differently about. While I can answer the question I am from TTS not Fullsac. Steve @ Fullsac is one of our dealers and a friend of mine.

I felt that way too when I got my 2013 SERK.  While I'm not totally adjusted to it (came from a 2002 Honda VTX 1800C), I'm much more comfortable with it than when I started.  Not sure how many miles you've ridden on yours yet, but I only put about 200 on mine before having to button her up for the winter.

I've noticed the same thing on the older bikes with cables when riding in first gear, so it's not just an electronic throttle problem.  It's also caused by the gear ratio, the extra slop in the gear dogs in the lower gears, and the fact that the low gears allow for more rapid acceleration and deceleration for the same amount of throttle input.  The best way to reduce the effect is to use a higher gear.  If you add more delay to the ETC in the ECM, it will also affect the rate your throttle reacts when you really want it to react quickly.  It's a tradeoff at best.

If I'm just putting around the neighborhood I ride in third gear (5 speed trans) at low rpm to eliminate that sudden on/off feeling.  It has the added positive affect of keeping the mechanical and exhaust noise levels down, which neighbors tend to appreciate.  Before anyone throws out the old "lugging" red herring, it isn't lugging if you putt around in the lower gears just off idle.  Just don't grab a handful of throttle when you decide to take off without shifting down first.

My 12 SEUC felt the same when I first got it.  I've learned to compensate for it.  Not sure what I'm doing but I'm able to keep my hand steady.

I worked around this with Throttle Boss on hand grips.
One of my best buy.

I can remember having that problem after getting the FBW, honestly I couldn't say its a problem anymore but can't say that I do any thing any different either. Guess it trained me to what normal is.

The '09 SERG is kind of stiff and jerky. 'Have ridden a '10 and a '12 that felt a lot more like a lubed, well adjusted cable...

I agree with the comments above it is something you get used to, but can still catch me out especially in low gears going over bumps etc. Perhaps a wee switchable throttle response button to adjust for low speed riding would be a nice addition to the accessories book.

Back in 2007 bought a BMW 1150 GSA and had a similar problem.  Engine was very responsive with lots of torque.  Just had to adjust to it.  Lighter grip, hold the throttle like a fly rod grip etc.
