rear tire cupping
« on: March 17, 2014, 04:37:05 PM »

Somewhere on here I read that somebody was able to get the dealer to replace their rear tire because of the cupping. Did I really read that or am I dreaming? My rear tire has been cupped and making noise since around 7,000 miles and I seriously doubt the dealer would replace it.

So was I dreaming?

'Had 2 rears replaced on the '09 SERG, same symptoms as yours. Everything (alignment, balance, etc...) was checked several times, all within spec, I always keep the tire pressure spot on. 'Don't know how the Dealers (had one replaced on the West Coast) handled it, but the tires were replaced, no charge to me.

Last October I ran across some Vehicle Dynamics Engineers, in a Steakhouse in Kingman, AZ (Chrysler & HD share the same Proving Grounds about 30 mins South of Kingman), showed them the bike and explained the issue, after some deliberation (they bought us a few more beers :2vrolijk_21:) they suggested "Shore (firm)up the left (drive) side bushings." Have since installed the GlidePro bushings, but haven't had a chance to put some miles on the bike, and see if the GlidePros have made any difference with the scalloping issue.
One school of thought on the scalloping issue is that Dunlop doesn't have the transition area on the Dual Compound tires figured out yet?

I don't think that I'm the only one that wants an alternative to the Harley Dunlops?

Had one replaced on my '11 FLTRUSE but it was under 7,000 so don't know what the outer limit is re: mileage (if any) for replacement.  And may depend on your dealer and how aggressive he is.  Might try the Dunlop American Elite as I've heard a lot of good things about it.  It is the 'aftermarket' tire for Harley baggers and doesn't say H-D on the sidewall - big deal.  And/or might try Michelin Commander II.  I just put a set of them on my '07 and have it on the front of my '12.  When I need a rear tire on the '12 I'm going with the Michelin just to see if it makes any difference.  I am anal about maintaining my tire pressure so I know that is not the problem but I've had cupping issues on all the different Dunlops - on my '07, the '11 ruse and the '12 cuse7.  All different size, aspect ratios but they were all Dunlops.   :nixweiss:

The OE Dunlops were great (no scalloping, cupping, cracking, just wearing as they should) on the '01 Switchblade and the '05 SEEG. 'Just tried the Commander IIs (and GlidePros) on the '05, have about 3k on the C IIs, so far, so good...

To my knowledge, nobody has come out with a direct replacement tire (size & load rating) for the 18s on the '09 SERG yet?

Let us know how you like the C II on the back of your '12? Is that a 16"?

It is a 16" on the '12 (and the '07 has a 16" also but different tire size since old style frame).  So far I like the C IIs fine on the '07 and on front of the '12.  Can't say I can tell all that much difference in the ride/handling vs the lops.  But I surely do hope they hold up better without cupping.   :2vrolijk_21:
