hard finding neutral ?
« on: March 19, 2014, 07:19:01 PM »

during this past winter  i wanted to installed my new chrome inner primary from HD  along with my new comp. kit and GMR'S  oiler tray  now before i park my bike i notice towards the end of riding season that it was getting more troublesome in  finding neutral  while the bike was running ..
what i found was the shifter shaft was dry on lubricate causing  my shifter to stick and made it hard to find neutral  ...so i clean the shaft  and the tube that the shifter goes thru etc and reassemble with antiseize now the shifting is butter smooth again
just wanted to share this info  case anyone else had problems

I've seen some people drill and tap the primary to install a grease zerk, but IMHO it's better to just take it all apart and thoroughly clean everything, then apply a thin coating of high temp anti-seize or similar lubricant.  Since there is no seal to keep grease inside the chamber for the shaft, just pumping grease in there with a grease gun makes for a mess that keeps on giving as the grease heats up and runs out onto your nice shiny parts.

lol ..my shaft has a o-ring  to help keep the grease in  and to keep water out and debris out   ... don't recommend drilling for grease zerk due do the plastic bushing that's inside of shaft tube ..just  grabb a small bristle pipe cleaning tool  and clean up is a breeze...it doesn't required high temp grease if you don't have any around  regular temp will work just fine

I learned something here.  My older bikes didn't have an effective seal and I didn't realize they had changed.

Btw, thanks for posting this.  I used to include removing, cleaning, and lubing the shifter shaft in my winterizing routine but managed to forget the past couple years.  Now it's on my list for this spring thanks to you, assuming spring ever actually springs.

Jerry, can you take a look at mine when you come down for the Maggie Valley GTG in September?
I would think Spring will have Sprung by then.

Makes me rethink my opinions about you Chip if you're asking Jerry to take a look at your shaft.  :o

We can always have some kind of a GTG in his neck of the woods. I'd like to meet the man behind that keyboard myself someday. He tosses a lot of great info out here.

Sounds like it's time for a ride to Indiana.
