07 Saddle Bags stolen right off bike
« on: November 24, 2006, 10:39:41 PM »

 >:( >:( >:( >:( >:( >:( >:( >:( >:( >:( >:( >:( >:( >:( >:( >:( >:( >:( >:( >:( >:( >:( >:(

Ok here is the scoop from a friend who had his saddle bags stolen of his 07 SEUC. He locked up his bike parked right in front of carport near his window and with his window cracked to listen to anyone messing with his bike. He woke up the next morning and find missing are his two saddle bags. Come to find out how they stole them is quite unique

1. With your bike locked up removed the bike cover carefully
2. Take a ... and remove the saddle bags (its so easly my 14 year old nephew saw how they did it)
3. The theves will go put speakers in them, paint it and resell them to other people on ebay

With a cost factor for replacing the saddle bags almost $2,000.

What pisses me off is the MoFo MoCo cant come up with something to keep the bags from being stolen.

What good is the alarm system?

I can see how they can simply be done but what is there to slow or to keep them from stealing them?

Locks are ok on the bags for honest people but that does not keep them from being stolen.

Thoughts anyone?

Big Dave,
It's no secret that the spring clips that the saddlebag pins lock onto can be easily pried apart. Once detached from the clips, the bags come off the bar on the bottom easily and quietly.Sorry to hear about you friend's loss, but the locks on the saddlebags are to prevent the contents from being stolen, not the bags themselves. My guess is the bags were stolen "to order" They cost about $900 change apiece plus tax. Somebody somewhere went down and put out the word they needed a set of bags ( maybe only one) and would pay say $200, no questions asked. Most of us have $500 deductible insurance policies, so any mishap is a $500 hit. This is easy money to any even halfa$$ed thief. As to security, a good thief can bypass any alarm system and steal anything anytime. There's a show about this on TV and it's eyeopening believe me. Don't know what to tell you about the future. For the moment however, I'd be stoppin in to the H-D dealers in my area and seeing if anyone inquired about saddlebags for a SEUC. Chances are the road to your friends bags starts there.

I wonder if theres a way to run a carriage head style bolt (without the square just under the head) into the saddle bag and then place a  washer and nut on the inside? Might slow 'em down. A drilled hole after the nut with a cotter pin in it would be added insurance. Too bad we even have to think of making mods for theft deterrence.  >:( >:( >:(
It would be nice if the stealing slimeball got caught in the act by an angry owner with a Louisville slugger in his hands... oh, sorry, I was revenge fantasizing.  [smiley=nixweiss.gif]

You can change the Alarm Sensitivity most folks leave it in the stock setting, which means you have to really bump it to get it to alarm. A remote pager II would also help -that way you don't have to leave the window open (In the winter)  [smiley=xyxthumbs.gif]

OK I don't come here for the paranoia but this sounds like a credible threat.

Now I know why I take all of my stuff in the hotel at night, I don't feel so stupid anymore, but I will look suspect with the hard bags walking in.

I guess I should have gotten a ground floor cityside room in Nelson.

I've heard of this happening before but it was always someone that didn't lock the bag.  This is the first time I've heard of them unbolting the bags from the mounts.

Out of curiousity, I just went out into the garage, took a small screwdriver and a curved pick and very easily popped the bags with the lid locked, It didnt take much.

seems like someone will make a lock for this, wheres theres a buck to made, someone will make it. the bags coupled with the heated corbin seat or even the stock seat, plus the leather tour pak, would make a nice little 4 minute score,

B B, I was thinking of a way to have a bar that goes between the mount points on the inside of the bag to tie them together in addition to your idea for locking them down.  Maybe just some flat stock drilled on each end and slipped in behind the liners when you bolt those puppies on.

Seems like an additional level of security/strength to complicate removal for a thief.  It's all about speed with those guys and if it looks like too much trouble they wouldn't mess with it.  Also, if you have the alarm set it would take way too much movement to get them off without setting off the alarm.
