Clutch lever leaking fluid
« on: March 24, 2014, 08:52:59 PM »

2013 Cvo Road Glide. Was headed down hwy 75 mph and noticed some clear drops on glove box lids. Not raining wiped off more drops appeared. Stopped and parked bike came back hour later fluid was dripping from clutch lever onto floor board. Was not leaking from reservoir lid. Road 150 miles back to motel no shifting problems. Still have slight leak. Anyone else with this problem. Let me know.  Jim

It's possible your clutch reservoir was slightly overfilled.  As your clutch disc's wear, the reservoir could become even more overfilled to the point of leaking.  (It works the opposite of what you might think.)  Check the fluid level. It may be as simple as bleeding a bit of fluid off.  And don't over tighten the reservoir cover fasteners.  You can easily deform the gasket.

Same happened to my 2010 SESG.  As clutch wears, the fluid can be forced out of the reservoir gasket. Here's the fix:  Stand bike upright, turn handlebars all the way to the right, remove the two screws on the reservoir, remove the cap, and take out some of the fluid.  You'll see a "fill" line in the reservoir....remove enough fluid to take the level to just below the fill line.  Also, the fluid in your reservoir will permanently damage paint, so cover your tank and fender in case of a spill.  I found a syringe was the easiest way to remove some of the fluid.  Also, don't over tighten the reservoir screws.

Since you have a 2013 I would recommend you get to a dealer ASAP and report the problem, and let them fix it under warranty.  If any painted parts have been damaged by the fluid the warranty should also cover that, but you need to take it in to have them fix the leak to make sure it's documented.  Fixing it yourself, if possible, leaves you holding the bag if paint damage shows up later due to the fluid.  BTW, you do realize that the brake fluid in the clutch will damage paint, right?

If it's not an overfilled reservoir as noted above by sadunbar, it could be a distorted gasket or a bad sealing surface on the reservoir for the gasket.  It could also be a loose banjo fitting for the hydraulic line, or a defective seal for the actual piston and shaft in the M/C.  All of those things have been reported as problems in recent years.

Be careful. That DOT4 will destroy or eat paint or anything else.

BTW, don't put the syringe back in the medicine cabinet!   :orange:
