rocker arms
« on: March 26, 2014, 05:40:40 PM »

I am about to replace my Woods lifters with S&S premium lifters. While I'm at it I'll also inspect the cams and replace the cam bearings, o-rings etc. Since I have SE quick install adj. pushrods I don't need to take the rocker covers off. I don't read much here about rocker arms going bad. How often should rocker arms be inspected and serviced with new bushings?

The laters ones are not as robust as the olders ones were, softer and they wear quicker. Easy to check them

How many miles on your motor?  Do you have stock rocker arms or roller rocker arms?  Are you running high lift cams?  If you have the time, it's worth checking them.  It's a simple job, just a bit time consuming.  However, it's not likely you would have to replace your rocker arm bushings.  With all the various motors I've been inside of over all the years, I think I've replaced rocker arm bushings two or three times.

Price of the rockers went up recently.
Being that yours sees the road often I would suggest having then bushed with a stronger material than the OEM Harley bronze. Of late it is softer than the old evos and early twin cams. Hones twice as fast. Plus lots of low mileage motors show wear. The older ones were good for the life of a top end anyway.

Can't comment whether the OEM materials have changed over the years - however the replacement bushings I've installed I purchased from S&S...

I've got 55,000 miles on my motor, a 2010 SEUC. I put in a Woods TW-7H cam, .575 lift. From the service manual it looks like a pretty straight forward job if you have the right tools. At a minimum I'd need to pick up a rocker arm bushing reamer tool. Jims, part no. 94804-57 is around $175 at the discount shops. If you want to get the Jims rocker arm puller and installer, add another $235 to the price. The latter two tools aren't required but would make the job easier with less likelihood of trouble along the way. Not sure it is worth it to get these tools for a part that appears to hold up pretty well over the life of the motorcycle. Might be better off taking worn parts (with S&S rocker arm bushings) to the dealer for their install or just buy new rocker arms outright.

You're right.  If you think it's a one time project, it's not worth the expense of purchasing tools.  The simplest solution would be to replace them (if it's necessary).   :2vrolijk_21:
